Wednesday Tasting: Loop de Loop 5 - 7pm Free

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We’ll have Loop de Loop from the Columbia Gorge pouring 5 - 7pm. Details coming.

Loop de Loop wines’ Light Anthology Vineyard, sits at 1250 feet on Underwood Mountain, with a panoramic view of the Columbia River and Mount Hood. Formerly known as the Underwood Mountain Vineyard, It was planted in 2001 by Joe and Jack Brady, and we fell in love with it long before we were able to buy it. We grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, in a vineyard nestled between two forests and surrounded by incredible biodiversity.

The Light Anthology Vineyard is our 9 acre, organically farmed vineyard that Scott farms meticulously – practicing regenerative farming.

Next to the vineyard we have an additional 8 acres of woods and meadow. We are working to restore the land and, with the help of friends, have planted hundreds of native plants, grasses and flowers in an effort to cultivate a healthy, holistic system that will ultimately produce the best wine possible.  Scott’s most important task is restoring the soil health in the vineyard. He is doing this through incorporating the following practices, among others: encouraging diversity in the vineyard floor; seeding diverse cover crops; thoughtful composting; spraying compost teas; use of fish hydrolyse to encourage beneficial fungi and by spraying cinnamon oil rather than sulfur whenever possible. He doesn’t use synthetic chemicals and he doesn’t spray copper. Additionally, he has hung Barn Owl and Raptor boxes to help with rodent pests. We do not till nor irrigate and hope to incorporate livestock into vineyard care soon.

Friday Flight 3/20: Spain

Spain $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Spain sits among the world’s most important wine countries, with over one million hectares under vine across 139 wine-producing regions. But while Spanish wine is no longer unfamiliar to the U.S. wine trade and consumers alike, the sheer range of quality wines produced across this Iberian country is often underestimated.

To classify the wines of Spain under a single style or character would be impossible. This is a country of exceptional diversity, with vines planted across a huge range of climates and geographies. Vineyards stretch from the lush and rainy coasts of Green Spain to the extreme and arid plains of the Meseta, from the valleys carved by the Ebro River to the volcanic Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa.

The sheer number of grape varieties also widens the spectrum of Spanish wines. More than 200 grape varieties are grown here, from international favorites to the country’s many local specialties, like Tempranillo, Mencía, Albariño, and Verdejo. While local winemakers carry on the traditions passed down through Spain’s winemaking history, they also look to push their industry forward, experimenting with styles and increasingly focusing on organic viticulture.

Pardevalles 2024 Albarín Blanco Tierra de Leon $20 - Tierra de León (officially DO León) is a Spanish wine region in the southern province of León, specialized in intense, structured reds and unique rosés made from the indigenous Prieto Picudo grape. Located at 750–800m altitude with alluvial, rocky soils, this continental climate region also produces crisp white wines using Albarín and Godello. Albarín Blanco is a rare, indigenous white grape variety from Asturias and León in northwestern Spain, distinct from the more common Albariño. It is known for producing highly aromatic, crisp, and high-acid wines with prominent floral, pear, and citrus notes, sometimes displaying a slightly bitter, refreshing finish.

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya 2023 Monastrell Jumilla $15 - Jumilla is renowned for its old-vine Monastrell wines, whose depth and complexity and intense fruitiness convey the Mediterranean character of its land and history.

Rivarey Rioja Crianza 2020 $14 - With more than 600 wineries, 14,800 winegrowers, and centuries of history, Rioja is Spain’s leading wine region. Not only was it the first Spanish region to be awarded Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1925, but it was also the first to be elevated to the prestigious Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) status, in 1991. Nearly 30 years later, there are still only two regions in Spain (out of 67) that have met the stringent standards for DOCa classification.

Rioja is most well known for its red wines, which are made primarily from the Tempranillo grape variety and aged in the region’s huge collection of oak barrels—a tradition tied to the long and winding history of Rioja itself. Many wineries are more than a century old, and quality winemaking techniques honed over generations have been passed down to today’s Rioja winemakers.

Vera de Estenas Bobal Utiel-Requena 2024 $18 - Recently, a handful of quality-minded growers, using artisanal farming and vinification, are producing highly individual wines with true complexity.

Bodegas Monteabellon 2024 Tempranillo “Avaniel Ribera del Duero $19 - One of Spain’s top red wine–producing regions, Ribera del Duero is located in the northwest of the country, about two hours north of Madrid, in the center of Castilla y León, Spain’s largest autonomía, or state. Ribera del Duero runs from the east of Aranda del Duero westward to Valladolid.

Bonus Wines

Guimaro 2024 Ribeira Sacra Tinto $25 - Ribeira Sacra is probably the DO with the most dramatic wine-growing landscape in Spain. It is in the heart of Galicia, an autonomous community in the far north-west of Spain, within the provinces of Lugo and Ourense. The canyons of the River Sil are especially known for their breathtaking beauty and depth, a spectacular landscape of sheer, almost vertical walls and scattered plots of vineyards.

Pecina 2019 Rioja Crianza $27 - With more than 600 wineries, 14,800 winegrowers, and centuries of history, Rioja is Spain’s leading wine region.

Álvaro Palacios 2022 Priorat Les Terrasses $53 - The name Priorat derives from the Latin. The Priory of Scala Dei gives name to the region. There is an interesting story about why the Carthusian monks decided to establish in the Priorato de Scala Dei. It was around 1163. A shepherd told a priest about a vision he had: angels descended from a celestial ladder. Soon after the monks started the construction of the Priorato de Scala Dei: the priory of the stairway of God. A small village grew next to the Priorato to provide service to its needs and the region took the name of the monastery. Monks were gone a long time ago but the ruins of the monastery remained and are actually being restored. One of the wineries in Priorat holds the name of Scala Dei and its wines are actually produced at the old priory cellars.

Friday Flight 3/13 4 - 8pm Old World Bordeaux vs New World Bordeaux Blends

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase

Bordeaux, as a whole, is France’s largest appellation d’origine côntrolée (AOC) area, though it’s not the country’s largest winegrowing area. It makes up 25 percent of France’s AOC vineyard area but accounts for only 14 percent of the country’s total vineyard area. Although Bordeaux is famous for its 1855 classification, only 5 percent of the vineyard area is devoted to the production of cru classés.

Vineyards in Bordeaux are typically associated with estates, or châteaux, rather than plots of land, as in Burgundy. There are approximately 6,300 winegrowers in Bordeaux (half of what there was 20 years ago). The average size of a Bordeaux wine estate is 17.6 hectares of vines, and nearly 60 percent of the region’s estates are still owned and run by families.

Additionally, there are 300 Maisons de Négoce, which sell more than two-thirds of Bordeaux’s wine across 170 countries. Bordeaux has 33 regional wine cooperatives and three cooperative unions. There are also 82 wine brokers that facilitate transactions between négociants and the estates.

Although a relatively young wine industry, Washington State is the nation's second largest wine producer with more than 900 wineries, and is ranked among the world's top wine regions. Washington wines are found nationally in all 50 states and internationally in more than 40 countries.

With more than 50,000 acres planted, Washington State has ideal geography and conditions for growing premium vinifera grapes. Primarily grown on their own root stocks, vines produce grapes of consistent quality year after year. While Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Riesling and Chardonnay dominate in terms of production, over 40 different varieties are produced throughout the state.

Washington has consistently outperformed other leading wine regions with a higher percentage of wines scoring 90 points and above, while maintaining a lower average cost for these wines, based on Wine Spectator magazine’s ratings.

Lone Birch Cabernet Sauvignon WA 2024 $15 - In the shadow of the Rattlesnake Mountains stands the 70-year-old Lone Birch Tree, providing shade to vineyard workers, a landmark to travelers, and inspiration to generations of descendants of Howard Miller, entrepreneur, successful realtor, and visionary. Bouquet of black currant and toasted oak leading to a smooth finish with soft lingering tannins.

Château Fage, Graves de Vayres Rouge 2022 $18 - 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec. Medium-bodied and supple, with silky tannins and rounded acidity. Flavors of black cherry, dark raspberry, and blackberry mingle with notes of cocoa, leather, and clove.

Luke Red Blend Wahluke Slope WA 2021 $22 - Aromas of ripe red and dark berries with hints of spiced oak, ground cloves and cedar. Full-bodied with an opulent mouthfeel and generous fruit. It has some sandy texture to its tannins. Plush and velvety on the finish. Drink or hold. Cabernet + Merlot.

Château de Ribebon, Bordeaux Supérieur 2019 $20 - Intense color, shiny ruby reflections. On the nose is red and black fruit ripe and concentrated tannins Complex and sophisticated wine, well balanced throughout the tasting. Generous volume, full bodied and rich and elegant nal taste. The tasting reacts the expression of the terroir and the quality of the grapes. Merlot, Cabernet and Cab Franc.

Château Recougne, Bordeaux Supérieur 2022 $21 - Ripe dark berries, ground cloves and licorice on the nose, with a subtle stony character. Tight and chewy, with a medium body, firm tannins and a bitter, spiced, walnuty finish. Merlot.

Bonus Wines

Board Track Racer, The Vincent Red Columbia Valley 2022 $25 - Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec and Cab Franc. Starts out with intense, aromatic dark fruits on the nose mingled with notes of oak spice and slight herbs. It's full bodied and bold on the palate, giving deep flavors of black and red cherry, blackberry, and hints of cedar box and spice.

Château Piney, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2021 $31 - A small, under-the-radar Bordeaux, this excellent value shows a deep ruby color enhanced by aromas of tobacco, cedar, leather and blueberries. Dry, with firm tannins, the palate provides flavors of dark berries, mocha, and leather. Very enjoyable and excellent at this price point.

Andrew Januik, Cabernet Sauvignon Lady Hawk Horse Heaven Hills 2022 $55 - Lady Hawk represents the unique quality of the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. This Cabernet Sauvignon brings together three of the Horse Heaven Hills' finest vineyards, Lady Hawk, Andrews and Discovery, to create a supple, beautifully complex wine that offers both power and finesse. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot. This is dense and delicious stuff that has a great acid streak. Creme de cassis, anise, dark chocolate and graphite all fill the palate with excellent volume. Great now, enjoy over the next fifteen years.

Friday Flight 3/6 Rugerri Corsini

Ruggeri Corsini Fight 4 - 8pm with Francesca Argamante $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Nicola was born in Tuscany and raised in Piedmont. There he met a lithe woman from Sardinia with jet-black hair, a fine roman nose, and a mesmerizing accent. They were at the University of Turin together: she was getting a post-graduate degree in viticulture; he a PhD in vine disease and ampelography, and they fell completely in love.

In the early 1990s Nicola was consulting for various producers in the Langhe while writing his papers and fulfilling his degree requirements when he stumbled upon the hamlet of Corsini. It lay in the southern, somewhat cooler zone of the appellation, tucked away in a little valley just north of Monforte d’Alba, a couple of houses and farm buildings surrounded by vines. He took Loredana there. In 1995 they got married, bought the hamlet, and started their life together.

Podere Ruggeri Corsini: farm + Nicola’s mother’s surname + name of hamlet. Nicola’s mother is in there because she provided money to make the purchase.

Nicola still consults here and there, but mostly he is in the cellar while Loredana is in the vines; their two daughters, Vittoria and Francesca, are also involved in the domaine. They have 30 acres of vineyards divided among nearly as many parcels, and average just over 7,000 cases of wine each year. They walk a really nice line between traditionalists and modernists, meaning that their wines are transparent with clear impressions, while possessing superb drinkability.

2023 Langhe Bianco $20 - a white wine from a blend of an autochthonous grape - Arneis - and two international varieties - Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Thus, obtaining a wine with an intense and complex bouquet, with a good structure and a good longevity

2022 Langhe Rosso "Matot" $16 -  Dolcetto, with varying percentages of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Albarossa and Pinot Nero. Fresh and snappy with lively red fruits and brisk acidity.

2024 Dolcetto d'Alba $21 - The region has twelve different appellations of Dolcetto, it is very appreciated in the north-west of Italy as well as in the rest of the world. It is a wine known for its fragrance and freshness: it has a ruby red color with violet reflections, a fresh, fruity bouquet and a dry, rich, harmonious flavor that leaves a lingering scent of almonds

2023 Barbera d’Alba $21 - This wine is considered the typical red table wine: originally appreciated in Piedmont and Lombardy, today it is widely spread throughout Italy and the world. It has a ruby-violet, red color, a rich and varied bouquet with fruit notes reminiscent of blackberries, cherries, strawberries and berry jam, along with spicy notes of cinnamon, vanilla and green pepper. Its deep, full and robust flavor softens the acidity typical of this variety.

2022 Langhe Nebbiolo $26 - Thanks to its properties, Nebbiolo vine produces grapes of the highest quality, resulting in a well balanced wine as for color, body, acidity and particularly persistent aromas. It is known to be a vine suited for aging with aromas that evolve in a spectacular way.

Bonus Wines

2022 Barbera d’Alba Superiore 'Armujan' $32 - Armujan is our pride and joy: alongside the Barolo Bussia Corsini DOCG, this wine is highly appreciated and recognized by international oenology journals. It's a wine that can be drunk young or be put to age for eight - ten years. It's ruby-red in color. His nose is fresh, with soft scents of ripe plum.

2020 Barolo "Tradizionale" $39 - Medium-deep ruby red with garnet to orange overtones. Ther should be an exhilarating rush of fresh-ness on the nose, followed immediately by warming broader elements, which can include candied cherries, bitter cherries, plums, strawberries and raspberries. There are also darker tones of chocolate, hazelnuts, licorice, with herbs, cinnamon and vanilla as well.

2021 Barolo 'Bussia' $60 - One of Corsini's two flagship wines, Bussia is one of Monforte's finest vineyards; Corsini's vines range in age from 36-56 years old.

A thoroughly impressive, flamboyant and hearty wine, beautifully perfumed, warm and inviting, vertically structured in a way that's uniquely Nebbiolo. Brown spices, licorice, vanilla and resinous herbs fill the glass before a basket of red fruits—berries, plums, cherries—envelops your tastes.

Friday Flight 2/27 - Bordeaux

Bordeaux, as a whole, is France’s largest appellation d’origine côntrolée (AOC) area, though it’s not the country’s largest winegrowing area. It makes up 25 percent of France’s AOC vineyard area but accounts for only 14 percent of the country’s total vineyard area. On average, Bordeaux produces 59 million cases of wine per vintage. Red wines typically make up 85 percent of the total volume production. Dry whites and Crémant de Bordeaux account for 10 percent; rosés, clairets, and Crémant de Bordeaux rosés make up 4 percent; and sweet Bordeaux whites account for 1 percent of total volume.

Bordeaux’s variable weather patterns can make the growing season unpredictable. Part of the reason that Bordeaux winegrowers are experts at the art of blending—rather than masters of varietal wines—is that blending enables them to manage climatic inconsistencies and their impact on the ripening, quality, and quantity of the individual varieties.

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Château Costis Bordeaux Rouge 2024 $14 - 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Extraordinary deep, shiny, red color. The aroma is powerful with a lot of fruitiness. The taste is soft with a very good amount of tannin for a Bordeaux wine. It is a very well balanced wine.

Château Lacoste Bordeaux Rouge 2022 $16 - Nice ruby color, a nose of berries and a delicate and elegant body with a lovely finish. Soft tannins and a good balance between roundness and power. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Château La Maroutine 2018 Bordeaux Rouge $17 - A deep and intense garnet red colour, a warm and powerful nose with touches of red crystallised fruit. Soft tannins in the mouth mixed with toasted bread aromas.

Château Larose-Trintaudon 2019 Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois $21 - A brilliantly gleaming intense ruby red. On the nose, a festival of delicious fruit with notes of strawberry and redcurrant. Superbly fresh and well-balanced with great purity of fruit, smoothness without excessive exuberance, and a silkiness of tannins. 47% Cabernet, 47% Merlot and 6% Petite Verdot.

Champ Fleury Bordeaux 2022 $23 - 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Merlot-dominant Bordeaux made by Gonzague Maurice of Château de Grandchamp. Sourced from vineyards near Saint-Émilion, it offers a classic Right Bank expression with soft structure and ripe fruit. Cabernet Franc adds lift and subtle spice.

Bonus Wines

Château De Cranne Blanc 2022 $24 - This is based on the Sauvignon Gris grape variety that, today, is rarely even heard of in Bordeaux, although it was commonly grown generations ago. Sauvignon Gris is more about elegance and floral fruit aromas. The vines are planted in clay, gravel and chalk-based soils. The Lacoste family is in its 7th generation of winemaking in hills of Bordeaux.

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2020 Pessac-Léognan $35 - The 2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a gorgeous, incredibly satisfying Pessac, and it's certainly up with the finest vintages I've tasted from this estate. It has lots of red, blue, and black fruits as well as ample spice, leafy tobacco, truffle, and smoked earth, and it develops a beautiful sense of complexity and nuance with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the vibrant, elegant style of the vintage, has ripe tannins, perfect overall balance, and a great finish. If you love a great Graves, buy a case of this beauty and enjoy over the next two decades. 95 Points Dunnuck

Château Cantenac Brown 2019 Margaux $95 - Classified Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855 during the official classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition. Situated on magnificent gravel soils conducive to producing great wines, is planted on 60 hectares with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new. The wines of Château Cantenac deliver a perfect representation of the very best Margaux, opulent, fine and deliciously complex.

Friday Flight 2/20 Grenache from around the globe.

Grenache/Garnacha/Cannanou

The European grape known as Garnacha in Spain and Grenache in France is a versatile variety capable of producing quality wines in an array of styles and flavor profiles. Depending on where the vines are grown, the fruit can be used for red, white, and rosé wines; still and sparkling styles; and even natural or fortified sweet wines. As these vines are extremely sensitive to variations in soils, climate, and elevation, the wines can vary dramatically from one appellation to another. Within the category of red Garnacha alone, one appellation may produce medium-bodied wines that are brimming with red fruit, while a nearby region might yield full-bodied, black-fruited, and tobacco-laden wines.

Ampelographic evidence shows that Garnacha mostly likely originated in what is now Northeastern Spain. Carbon dating of leaves and seeds found at archeological sites shows that it was planted as early as 153 BC, making it one of the oldest known grape varieties.

Because the grape thrives in hot, windy, and dry conditions, it was ideally suited for this arid region. However, plantings of the grape quickly spread to other areas in the north and east—first to Catalonia, and then to regions under Crown of Aragon rule, such as the Roussillon PGIs in France. The grape has a long history in other southern French areas, but it is also found in Corsica, Sardinia, Southern Italy, Sicily, Croatia, and even Greece.

Garnacha is currently the seventh most planted grape variety in the world and the fifth most planted red grape. It occupies third place among red varieties used for quality wines in Europe, topped only by Tempranillo and Merlot. The majority of grapes are red Garnacha, which are used to produce a range of wines, including reds and rosés in still, sparkling, and sweet styles. Generally, the wines from this grape will have medium body, low to medium acidity, and high alcohol.

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase

San Alejandro "Evodia" Garnacha Calatayud 2023, Spain $15 -  The nose is rich and perfumed, with a symphony of red fruit and spice aromas. Wild cherry, raspberry, and cranberry intermingle with notes of delicate spice box, fresh crushed herbs, and a touch of wet stone minerality. As the wine opens up, subtle floral undertones of violet and rose petals emerge, enhancing its overall complexity.

Le Paradou Grenache France 2021 $19 - Nose of black and red berries with spicy notes. On the palate good concentration, roundness and freshness at the same time. Bright crunchy cherry and blackcurrant flavors with hints of pepper.

Luzador 2022 Los Andreses Tinto, Spain $19 - Fermented in stainless steel, with some whole clusters. Delicious combination of dark red fruits, like cherry and plum, along with herbal accents and subtle dark spices. Soft and moderately juicy texture.

Bernabeleva 2024 Camino Navaherreros, Spain $20 -  It has a very attractive nose of red berries and wild herbs, a vibrant palate with very fine tannins and the sparkling sensation of the granularity from the granite soils where the vines grow.

Illahe 2022 Grenache, Wahluke Slope Washington $23 - Wahluke Slope is located in south-central Washington by the town of Mattawa. It is a sub-appellation of the Columbia Valley. The area is geographically isolated, bordered by the Columbia River, Saddle Mountains, and Hanford Reach National Monument. The name is a Native American term for ‘watering place.’

Bonus Wines

Domaine de L’Amauve Côtes Du Rhône Seguret “La Daurele” Blanc 2024 $28 - Grenache Blanc. Pristine passionfruit and gooseberry aromas introduce this vibrantly fresh white wine. Juicy and mouthwatering, its zesty demeanor is enhanced by whiffs of fresh green herb and white blossoms.

Cardedua 2020 Cannonau di Sardegna Italy $25 - Juicy red cherry, wild raspberry, and dried fig unfold alongside hints of rosemary, black pepper, and a touch of smoky earth. The palate is vibrant yet structured, with soft tannins and refreshing acidity that keep it lifted and balanced.

Unti 2019 Grenache Dry Creek Valley California $49 - The French are not the only ones to perfect Grenache. Mick Unti has also managed to do so in Sonoma County. His version has spicy red fruits that segue into flavors of red licorice, white pepper and black cherry.

Friday Flight 2/13

Friday Flight 2/13

The Flight

Languedoc is the largest producer of organic wines in France, as well as the biggest producer of IGP and AOC rosé wines in the country, exceeding the production of Provence. The region has also become a welcoming area for foreigners, attracting producers not only from other regions of France but from the world over. Languedoc is now flying high on the reputation of its rich history, culture, and revolutionary spirit.

Located in Southern France, the Languedoc is part of the large Mediterranean coastal area now known as the Occitanie region, reaching from the Spanish border on the southeast to the region of Provence in the east. The Languedoc makes up approximately 90 percent of the territory; Roussillon occupies the other 10 percent. Together they represent France’s largest wine-producing region and vineyard area—more than one in three French wines is produced here. The greater Languedoc-Roussillon region is also the largest vineyard area in the world with a geographic identity. Viticulture is one of the main drivers of the local economy, and many of the wineries are small family holdings that date back generations.

Languedoc’s vineyard history dates to the 5th century BC when the Greeks introduced vines to the area. And, as occurred in many other French vineyard regions, winemaking expanded under the Romans. Viticulture has continued to play a crucial role in the regional economy since that time.

In the first millennium, a unique method called passerillage was used to produce wines; harvested grapes were dried in the sun for over-ripening. In the 17th century, construction of the Canal du Midi, which connected the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, gave a boost to the wine sector. In the late 19th century, the railway system made it easier to ship wine to Northern France, which led to a period of great prosperity for the Languedoc wine community.

La Rousse Sauvignon Blanc 2024 $15 - The bright and fresh La Rousse Sauvignon Blanc hails from the Languedoc region of the South of France, in an area with gravely limestone vineyards. The limestone imparts spice, floral, and mineral flavors to the wine. In addition, thanks to the warm arid climate, the La Rousse Sauvignon Blanc has a more fruit forward character than you might have from the same grape grown in Bordeaux. Grapes are harvested quickly at night in order to maintain freshness when bringing the cool fruit to the cellar for fermentation.

Château d’Oupia 2023 Les Heretiques $14 - 100% Carignon (breaking the rules in Minervois - since Carignon must be blended to have the designation "Minervois" - hence, the "Heretiques"). This one has lovely fruit and earth.

Languedoc-Rousillon, France. Dark, ruby-colored, the wine is wonderfully clean and pure, with an exuberant personality, and gobs of rich, peppery, red and black fruit.

Faillnec Sainte Marie Corbieres 2022 $16 - The Corbières Rouge is made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. The harvest is partially destemmed before going into the fermentation tanks. This is a wine with enormous character often showing a rustic, somewhat “animal” aspect married to a vivacious wild berry symphony of aromas and flavors.

Olivier Coste “Mourvèdre Illégal” 2024 $18 - A soft and approachable wine with dark fruit aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant, layered with violets, a touch of black pepper and wild herbs. Beautifully balanced with a fresh palate and a long, smooth finish.

Château des Adouzes Le Tigre 2023 Faugères $21 -  This rocky, infertile soil forces vines to grow deep, making them drought-resistant and contributing to concentrated flavors. The Le Tigre blend specifically uses a mix of Grenache, Syrah, and ancient, 90-plus-year-old Carignan vines, reflecting the power and balance of the Languedoc terroir.

Bonus Wines

Olivier Pithon. “Mon P’tit Pithon” Blanc 2024, IGP Côtes Catalanes $23 -Pale yellow color with bright clarity. Nose: white flowers, citrus, white peach, fresh almond, and subtle floral hints. Palate: light to medium body, lively acidity, fresh fruit flavors, mineral character, balanced structure, and a clean, persistent finish with citrus notes.

Domaine de L’Horizion 2022 Mar i Muntanya Cotes Catalanes Rouge $30 -Domaine de l’Horizon is all about purity and terroir, making wines with old vines, organic farming, and minimal intervention. Mar i Muntanya (“Sea and Mountain”) reflects the dramatic landscape of the Côtes Catalanes, blending Grenache and Carignan from high-altitude vineyards with Syrah from lower, warmer sites. Red cherry, wild strawberry, and black raspberry lead, with layers of thyme, black olive, and crushed rock adding depth. The tannins are silky but firm enough to give structure, while bright acidity keeps everything lifted.

Olivier Pithon “Le Pilou” 2021, IGP Côtes Catalanes, Carignan $55 - This cuvée is composed exclusively of the superior grape variety from our winery, the Carignan. Two hundred-year-old grannies side by side on a limestone plateau. They are pampered with love in order to extract the most beautiful grapes: hand-sewn! The aim of this selection is to showcase the characteristics of a grape variety which, despite being noble, is showing her colors.

Wines of Southern Italy 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase

The relatively flat topography of Puglia, the warm climate, and the rich sand-clay soils make the region an agricultural haven. These features also enable Puglia to be a volume leader when it comes to grape growing in Italy; it easily vies with the Veneto and Emilia-Romagna for the distinction of the region that produces the most wine. The spectrum of grapes grown here is noteworthy, too; this is crucial to Puglia’s great cultural—and agricultural—heritage. But this abundance can make it challenging to zero in on wines made with thoughtful intention and care; there are countless gallons to wade through, and while more small, family producers are emerging, large corporations still dominate the marketplace.

Sardinia, Sardegna in Italian, is more than an island, it is only just part of Italy. For much of its modern winemaking history it was governed from Spain, and many of its distinctive local grape varieties such as Bovale Sardo (Graciano), Bovale Grande (Mazuelo) and Cannonau (Garnacha) are Spanish in origin. (This is just one of scores of examples of social history being reflected in a country's vineyards.)

The island lies between Corsica and Sicily, both in terms of geography and wine. Like Corsica, it experienced a late 20th century boom and bust in heavily subsidised new vine plantings. Like Sicily, it now shows signs of real potential and determination to make the most of its own raw ingredients.

Most of its produce is varietally labelled, some of it is aggressively modern and characterless (the co-operatives ruled without vision until recently).

Campania is located in the southern part of the Italian peninsula, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, in what might be called the shin of the peninsula’s boot. Its capital and largest city is Naples (Napoli). Tourists know Campania for the city of Naples, the ruins of Pompeii, the isle of Capri, and the beautiful Amalfi Coast. In the wine world, Campania is best known for red wines made from Aglianico such as Taurasi, and for white wines made from FalanghinaFiano, and Greco. It has 4 DOCGs, 15 DOCs (see map on this page), and 10 IGPs. In 2022, Campania had 25,600 ha (63,230 acres) of registered vineyards, producing almost 1.5 million hl (16.4 million cases) of wine—mostly table wine with only 19% of it at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape variety is Aglianico (34%).

The vineyards on the toe of Italy are as wild as every other aspect of life there, with few exported, or even exportable, wines being produced. The curious exception is the extraordinary, classical-tasting sweet white Greco di Bianco (Bianco being the name of the main town in the production zone). The obvious exception is Cirò, which produces a deep, intense red. For long Librandi have been Calabria’s leading producers, rescuing near-extinct local vine varieties such as Magliocco.

That strong winemaking tradition has carried on in Abruzzo throughout the centuries, becoming imbued in the region’s very culture. For much of that history, winemaking has been centered in the Peligna Valley, an inland, mountainous part of central Abruzzo. Over the last 50 years, however, viticulture has begun to evolve and spread across the region, and the region is now gaining recognition for its intense, vibrant, and full-bodied wines.

Abruzzo is a natural haven for grape growing, with over 32,000 hectares of vines planted across the region. Bright, sunny days, a large diurnal shift, and moderating influences from the Apennine Mountains to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the east make it the perfect place for grapes to thrive.

Most Italian regions have if anything an embarrassment of riches when it comes to grape varieties. Tuscany is far more than Sangiovese, while Piedmont has numerous local varieties apart from Nebbiolo. By contrast, Basilicata’s quality wine scene is completely dominated by Aglianico and that from one DOC: del Vulture. Basilicata is Aglianico’s kingdom: here the robust, intensely age-worthy (and bottle-age requiring) Aglianico reigns supreme.

The Aglianico del Vulture region is sheltered by the volcano Monte Vulture which rises to the east of the region. The climate is markedly continental for Italy with a long, dry autumn, essential for a late-ripening variety like Aglianico. Big day/night temperature differences help to retain acidity and freshness in the fruit.

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

San Giorgio Puglia Sangiovese 2024 $13 - San Giorgio Sangiovese di Puglia is an approachable, fruity red wine from the Puglia region of Italy, generally known for its bright ruby red color, notes of cherry, plum, and strawberry, and a smooth, medium-bodied palate.

Umani Ronchi Podere Montepulciano D'Abbruzzo 2024 $15 - A young and immediately drinkable wine: ruby red colour with violet tints. Robust and full-bodied in the mouth, slightly tannin-rich with a dry and flavourful finish.

Cantina Frentana DOC Montepulciano D’Abruzzo “Vallevó” 2024 $15 -This robust and chewy red from Abruzzo is 100% Montepulciano. Cantina Frentana is one of the top cooperatives in the region, and the warm and sunny days of Abruzzo provide optimal ripening conditions. The resulting wine is deeply colored and packed with notes of plum, dark cherry, blackberry, and a hint of spice.

Contini 2023 Cannonau di Sardegna "Tonaghe" $20 - Cannonau, aka Grenache, is Sardinia’s most important red varietal. Familiar aromatics of blackberry, plum, violets and provençal herbs greet you from the glass. The acidity effortlessly persists on the slightly rich palate with a lovely smooth texture that gently leads to a mildly sweet and herbal tannic finish.

Musto Carmelitano 2020 Aglianico del Vulture "Rosso Maschitano” $22 - 100% Aglianico. Earth forward aromas of black soil, sandalwood and cedar, blackcurrant, black pepper and smoked meat. The palate is robust, with thick set tannins that cry out for a rich cut of meat. There’s flavors of pitch black cherry, tar and graphite and iron-rich soil that lingers through the finish.

Bonus Wines

Perillo Irpinia Aglianico DOC 2019 $45 - Taurasi is one of the most exciting, yet unheralded regions in Italy for bold red wines. Michele Perillo's cellar is in Castelfranci, in the south-east corner of the appellation, about half an hour away from the town of Taurasi. This is a rich and intense wine, with a complex array of aromas including red and black fruits, earth, spice and herbs. Though full in body with a long, velvety finish, this is a very approachable Aglianico.

Friday Flight January 23rd Southern Rhône Valley

Southern Rhône Valley

The southern Rhône valley is Grenache country. It’s also known for its stones (pictured above). With a viticulture history dating back well before the Popes arrived in the 12th century and one of France’s oldest appellations d'origine contrôlée, Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, the southern Rhône is unquestionably one of France’s best known and premier winegrowing regions. The wines have the pedigree and age-worthiness of Burgundy and Bordeaux, but with a rustic, Mediterranean character. Like most wines from southern France, the reds, whites, and rosés are blends. Filling out the Grenache for the reds and rosés, you’ll often find Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault. The common white grape varieties are Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Viognier, Roussane, and Marsanne among others. From the alluvial riverbed stones found in Lirac, Tavel, and Châteauneuf to the limestone cliffs of the Dentelles de Montmirail that influence Beaumes-de-Venise (where you’ll find excellent Muscat), Vacqueyras, and Gigondas, great terroir abounds.

Virgile Costieres de Nimes 2023 $15 - The 2023 Château Virgile Costières de Nîmes Rouge is a red wine from the Costières de Nîmes AOC in the southern Rhône Valley, a region known for producing robust and flavorful wines. The nose is intense with black fruit aromas complimented with hints of garrigue spice. In the mouth the wine is dominated by dense black cherry flavors from the Syrah. The Syrah is complemented by hints of black pepper and red cherry notes from the Grenache.

Domaine de Fenouillet 2021 Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Rouge $15 - Grown by the Soard family in Beaumes-de-Venise, the 2021 Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Rouge blends 70% Marselan (a rare hybrid) with 30% Merlot. Ripe strawberry and plum lead the aroma, joined by forest floor (“sous-bois”) and a hint of Mediterranean herb.

Domaine Chantepierre 2024 Côtes du Rhône Rouge $16 - A classic blend of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre, this one is fermented entirely in stainless steel to preserve purity and freshness. Upon pouring, the wine shows a nice deep color and the nose is rich and decadent with notes of kirsch, cassis, plum, spice and rosemary.

Pesquie Terrasses Rouge Ventoux 2022 $21 - The Terrasses Rouge is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah made to express the supple fruit qualities of Ventoux. Deep ruby color with intense aromas of bright red berry fruits, pepper spice and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine displays lovely freshness with velvety round tannins and an added floral note.

La Réméjeanne Côtes du Rhône Un Air 2023 $23 - Certified organic. 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. All the fruit for Olivier Klein’s killer-value entry-level Côtes du Rhône grows on the estate’s highland, sandy limestone vineyards set around the hamlet of Sabran. Olivier aims for a vin de soif with this wine—juicy, floating fruit and sweetly floral perfumes.

Bonus Wines

Côtes du Rhône Blanc Chèvrefeuilles 2023 $27 - Certified organic. Chèvrefeuilles (pronounced ‘shev-ruh-foy’) is French for honeysuckle, the perfume of which you cannot escape during springtime in the Southern Rhône. Olivier is a sucker for the character and freshness of old-vine Clairette, which now accounts for half the blend in his delightful citrus- and white-plum-scented Les Chèvrefeuilles Blanc, with the remainder made up of 25% Roussanne and 25% Grenache Blanc.

Roger Sabon Lirac 2020 $29 - 70% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Carignan. Medium brick-red in colour. A lovely perfumed nose with red and black berry fruit with floral notes. Medium bodied with silky tannins that are, in part, derived from the sandy soils of Lirac. Lovely elegant fruit taste with a touch of spice and pepper for balance and a long finish.

Saint Siffrein Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2021 $54 - Grenache noir 55%, Mourvèdre 20%, Syrah 20%, Cinsault 5%. .Distinctly spicy berry fruits. Savoury but generous, deep and complex already. The acidity is deep set, well balanced, tannins quite dry and serious, grippy. A fairly powerful wine for the vintage that will take a few years to show its best. Likely to offer good value. Partly destemmed, fermented in concrete, aged in foudres and stainless steel.

Green Spain

Green Spain, as its name might suggest, is exceptionally lush and verdant. This cool, rainy part of the country stretches from Galicia in the northwest, just above Portugal, along the northern coast to Basque Country. The region’s mild maritime climate predisposes it to white grapes, but red grapes also succeed inland, where temperatures begin to warm.

Albariño is the primary white grape of Galicia, where it has made a name in Rías Baixas DO for its fresh, minerally, aromatic wines. Other white grapes include Godello and Treixadura, which may be blended into Rías Baixas wines or bottled as varietal wines in DOs like Ribeiro, Monterrei, and Valdeorras. The dramatic slopes of Ribeira Sacra DO showcase Galicia’s most promising red grape: Mencía, which makes fresh reds with berry flavors, floral tones, and plenty of acidity. Nearby Bierzo DO also makes serious Mencía wines.

Txakoli Primo 2024 Txakolina $15 - Txakoli Primo is situated in the coastal Basque town of Zarautz, located in the province of Gipuzkoa, within Spain’s autonomous Basque Country. This spritzy Basque white that's light in body and braced by lemony acidity. Lemon, lime, white grapefruit and green-apple flavors finish tangy and juicy.

Raul Perez “Ultreia” Bierzo 2022 $24 - From legendary winemaker, Raul Perez, this Mencia is filled with bright red and blue fruits , medium tannins and vibrant acidity. This Mencia-dominant wine also has small amounts of Trousseau, Garnacha and Palomino blended from cuttings planted over the years from pilgrims hiking the Camino de Santiago trail.

Bodega Luzdivina 2022 Viñademoya Beirzo $19 - 100% Mencia. Bright and vibrant, this wine shows the refreshing side of mencía, with firm, juicy red fruit boosted by mouthwatering acidity. Bierzo's schisty hillsides are palpable in its dark, deep minerality.

Quinta da Muradella Candea Monterrei 2022 $25 - Mencia, Tempranillo (Arauxa), Garnacha Tintorera, Mouraton. Monterrei is one of Galicia’s newer Denominaciones de Origen, and it’s not yet very well-known outside of Spain. The wines of Quinta de Muradella, made by Jose Luís Mateo, are probably the best international ambassadors for this tiny region with just 27 wineries.

Quinta do Estranxeiro 2022 Ribeira Sacra Tinto $26 - The “O Estranxeiro” Tinto is mostly made from Mencía. Fruit is picked by hand and destemmed, and the juice is transferred to large chestnut barrels and concrete tanks before fermentation commences spontaneously with wild yeasts. The must typically spends around three weeks macerating before pressing, and the wine is then aged in a mix of Italian Gamba botti, Garbelotto botti, and concrete tanks for 6-12 months before bottling.

Bonus Wines

Zarate Albariño Rías Baixas 2024 $28 - The Zárate estate is an old one, founded in 1707, in the classic Val do Salnés zone. Formed by the lower reaches of the Umia River, its undulating slopes of Xabre—weathered granite—soil, and cool climate make Val do Salnés the region’s greatest terroir and home to its longest-lived wines.

Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Camino Real 2021 $32 - Cultivated since Roman times, Ribeira Sacra’s steep terraced vineyards are some of the most picturesque and treacherous to work in the world of wine – think of the Douro, Cote Rotie, or the Mosel. Like those most dramatic terruños, winegrowing here is not for the faint of heart; it takes spirited determination, eternal optimism, a sense of tradition, and a willingness to collaborate.

Luis Rodriguez Ribeiro A Torna dos Pasas Tinto 2022 $57 - 40% Brancellao, and roughly equal parts Caiño Redondo, Caiño Longo, and Ferrol, vine age 10-20 years old, grown on steep south-facing granite hillsides located in the town of Arnoia, Galicia. Medium bodied, spicy and lush with dark floral aromas.

Washington State

With 1,000+ wineries specializing in everything from robust Cabernet Sauvignon to delicate Chardonnay and even late-harvest Riesling, it would seem difficult to generalize the common thread that unites Washington’s winemaking community. However, most winemakers and grape growers live and work in small towns that reflect the genuine, humble and hard-working communities of the American West. Tasting rooms are as likely to be in a converted old home as they are to be attached to a state-of-art winery, but they share one thing in common: authenticity.

Because nature has blessed Washington State with ideal viticultural conditions, winemakers here never have to force things in the vineyard. Soils are diverse from ancient glacial floodwaters, the intensive use of chemicals is often unnecessary, and the resulting wines are expressive of the terroir from which they originate. Backed by a culture of intensive research, Washington’s wineries offer wines that are as genuine as the people who make them.

Lone Birch Red Blend 2022 $15 - 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec. Bountiful aromas of black currants, blueberry jam, roasted vanilla bean, and smoked figs. Casasmith Sangiovese Cinghiale Rosebud Vineyard 2022 $23 - Earthy undertones to the tomato leaf, sour cherry and olive aromas. Some paprika. So fresh and savory, with plenty of energy and a medium body. The tannins are tamed, making this so drinkable.

Friday Flight 12/19 Piedmont

Italy's Piedmont

Situated in the northwest, Piedmont shares borders with France and Switzerland. The region’s Italian name, Piemonte, translates to foot of the mountains, which is a fitting descriptor for its subalpine location and the fact that it’s surrounded by mountains on three sides—the Alps in the north and west and the Apennines in the south.

There are two distinct winemaking areas in Piedmont. One is northeast of Turin in an area near Lake Maggiore. The other, which is the region’s real heartland, is located southeast of the city in the provinces of Asti, Alessandria, and Cuneo. The highest concentration of vineyards altogether is in the Langhe and the Monferrato hills. This is where the region’s most acclaimed vineyard sites can be found. The land here is strikingly dense with vines. The surface area of some villages, particularly around Barbaresco, is almost entirely planted with curving rows of grapevines.

As a wine region, Piedmont has had enormous success cultivating its own indigenous varieties. Though some international grapes like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc are planted here, the region is renowned for its red wines made from grapes like Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto and whites made from Cortese, Arneis, and Moscato.

Ercole Bianco Monferrato 2024 $15 - Fresh aromas of Asian and Bartlett pear meet lime citrus, white flowers and green apple, alongside a flinty minerality over white nectarine and herbs. The palate is as refreshing as its nose suggests, and mirrors notes of citrus, pear, and apple, finishing high on a wave of minerality. 80% Cortese, 15% Chardonnay, 5% Sauvignon Blanc

Corsini 2022 Langhe Rosso “Matot" $16 - Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and Barbera. The resulting wine exhibits a deep ruby red color with violet hues. The bouquet is rich and complex, dominated by black cherry, blackberry, and currant aromas, complemented by subtle notes of earth, tobacco, and leather. On the palate, it is well-structured, balancing lively acidity and moderate tannins, with flavors of juicy dark fruits and hints of pepper leading to a dry finish.

Ricossa Barbera d’Asti 2021 $18 - It is the most widespread grape variety in Piedmont, and one of the most versatile. Over time Barbera has become one of the most representative and interesting wines of Piedmont, with very interesting evolution and aging potential. Deep color, it has notes of red fruits such as blackberries, cherries and currants, homemade grandmother’s jams, and a touch of vanilla. The palate is a wine with an enveloping body and delicate tannins, fresh and with a balanced finish.

Ca’ del Baio Dolcetto D’Alba 2024 $20 - Vibrant violet-ruby in the glass. The nose offers ripe red plum, blueberry, and a hint of licorice, lifted by floral notes and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is fresh and supple, with soft tannins framing juicy fruit and subtle bitter almond. The finish is smooth and bright with energetic lift.

Bonus Wines

Le Marie Sant Agostino Arneis 2023 $23 - There is very little Arneis in the Pinerolese, and it is only made by Le Marie because they have a wonderful 30+ year old vineyard that gives extraordinary fruit. Lemon, lime, yellow pepper and spiced pear. A lovely textured, refreshing and delicate.

Reverdito Barolo 2019 $39 - In my opinion, Reverditio makes one the best Barolo's under $40 and the 2019 no exception. Garnet red with orange highlights, bouquet of woodland and aromatic herbs, slightly spicy. Full and balanced on the palate, with fine complex tannins.

Ca’ del Baio 2021 Barbaresco ‘Vallegrande' $46 - Here's a Decanter review of this wine: Bright cherry fruit expression, velvety and full-bodied with great balance. It has a firm structure and is well packed with fruit. Elegant wine with great refinement and a long licorice and slightly chocolatey aftertaste. Drink or hold. 95pts!

Friday Flight 12/12 Southwest France

The Flight 4 -8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional wines available for purchase.

The region’s history goes back millennia, to when Romans planted wine grapes here as they developed vineyards across France: Even thousands of years ago, the potential for greatness was clear in this part of the country. From the 12th century onward, abbeys and monasteries took hold in Southwest France to welcome pilgrims as they traveled through on the increasingly popular Camino de Santiago from northern Europe, which served to further cultivate local viticulture, spread native varieties, and import new ones. Today, the wines are as stunning as ever, thanks to a willingness to look forward but also a deep, abiding respect for the past.

Indeed, Southwest France is ranked at the top of all of the country’s wine regions for grape diversity: 300 varieties are planted here, including 130 indigenous ones spread out over 42 unique appellations. Names like Abouriou, Mauzac, Duras, Cot, Loin de l’Oeil, and more carpet the expansive landscape. If it’s breadth and excitement you’re looking for, Southwest France has it all: Both fresh and profound reds, crisp whites, and rosés that practically vibrate with energy.

Friday Flight 11/21: Sicily

Sicily 4 -8pm $16 for 5 pours.

The largest island in the Mediterranean with a winemaking history that extends back to the ancient Greeks, Sicily has quickly ascended to the top of the list of the hottest things in Italian wine, its vibrant, mineral whites and refreshing yet generous reds presenting a completely different narrative about what the island’s wines can be. For those who might have overlooked the area in the past, one thing is clear: the rustic “table wine” stereotypes of days-gone-by couldn’t be further removed from the reality of Sicilian wine today. In recent years, the island has proven itself capable of producing a dazzlingly eclectic array of value-driven styles that perfectly align with the modern fashion for freshness, purity of fruit, and effortless drinkability.

Having adapted over centuries to the specific conditions of their own home turf, they’re the perfect medium for expressing the identities of the island’s various growing regions. From the southeastern plateau to the Mediterranean coast to the northern mountains, each region of Sicily bears its own unique stylistic calling card. While some have commanded much of the recent industry hype, Sicily offers so much more to explore. For a new wave of younger and increasingly adventurous drinkers, there could be no better introduction to Sicily’s astonishing stylistic continuum than the island-wide Sicilia DOC designation. Established in 2012 to represent the entire territory of Sicily, the appellation unites Sicily’s myriad expressions into a coherent whole while respecting the qualities that make each expression distinct.
