Friday Flight: Portugal

The Flight: Portugal 4 - 8pm $16 for a flight of 5 wines.

No other country can match Portugal’s range of indigenous wine grape varieties, a rich palette for winemakers that goes back to the Bronze Age. Tartessians, Romans, and Phoenicians introduced winegrapes here, and viticulture eventually spread across Portugal’s diverse geography. Isolated from the rest of Europe, many unique wine varieties developed there as vines accustomed themselves to extremes in soil, weather and altitude.

Now, in a small country with over 250 unique, indigenous wine grape varieties to choose from, it is not surprising that Portuguese winemakers usually draw from a variety of grape sources to create balanced, flavorful blends. The result is that Portugal is blessed with a treasure chest of unique and distinctive wines.

Portuguese blends, with their distinctive combinations and unique character, reward people seeking diversity. These wines, at their best, often from small but distinct regions, combine ancient winemaking wisdom with the latest scientific and technical knowledge to put the wonder and pleasure back in wine.

Warres Altano Blanco 2024 $13 - Invigorating aromatic freshness, with hints of white flowers (honeysuckle), pineapple, lychee and green apple and just a touch of banana. Crispy acidity gives the wine great definition and balance. Gloriously fresh on the palate with the pineapple and green apple coming through as well as an attractive herbal note, ending with green tea. Malvasia Fina 50%; Viosinho 25%; Moscatel Galego 15%; Arinto: 10%.

Luis Pato DOC Bairrada Red Wine “Pato Rebel” 2021 $23 -Intense wine with aromas of raspberry, black plum, and subtle hints of black olive, pine, resin, and dark chocolate. It is a full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannins, good structure, and a notable freshness due to the Baga grape's acidity.

Prunus Dao Tinto 2022 $18 - Gota Wines specializes in value-driven bottlings from lesser-known Portuguese regions. The Prunus Tinto blends Jaen, Tinta Roriz, Alfrocheiro, and Touriga Nacional from vineyards in the Dão, one of Portugal’s oldest and most structured wine regions. Grapes come from granitic soils at altitude, ensuring freshness.

Filipa Pato DMNC 2024 Tinto $22 - 100% Baga.Filipa Pato grew up in Bairrada as the daughter of Luis Pato — the man who made Baga a grape the world has to take seriously — and has spent her own career proving she didn't just inherit a name. Together with her husband, sommelier William Wouters, she farms biodynamically and works almost entirely with indigenous varieties on limestone. Dinamica is her entry-tier red: 100% Baga from estate parcels in Ois do Bairro and a handful of like-minded growers, destemmed, fermented in stainless, with a long, gentle maceration.

Warres Altano Tinto 2022 $13 - Ruby colour, of medium intensity. Subtle forest aromas, elegant floral components, with hints of red fruit flavours. A soft texture and an easy-to-drink red wine profile, with a balanced combination of red fruits and spices,. The fruit comes from the family quintas in the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. Touriga Franca 40%; Tinta Roriz 30%; Tinta Barroca 30%.

Bonus Wines

Filipa Pato DMNC 2024 Blanco $23 - Filipa Pato’s 2024 DNMC Dinâmica Branco is a natural white blend from Bairrada, Portugal. Crafted from Baga and Maria Gomes grapes, it’s native yeast fermented and aged on lees in stainless steel and amphorae, reflecting her minimal-intervention approach.

Fresh and textural, it offers citrus, white flowers, and saline minerality with lively acidity. A vibrant, food-friendly white perfect for shellfish and light fare.

Sera Oca Tinto 2018 $29 - Tinta Roriz, Castelão, Touriga Nacional  This wine offers vibrant aromas of sour cherry, mint and liquorice, with a good balance of intensity and freshness. Its profile is complemented by balsamic notes and a long, satisfying finish.

Gota 2022 Bergamota Private Selection Douro $38 - Ripe plum and black cherry cola are primary on the nose, with secondary aromas of smoke, violets charred bread and hints of leather follow. The palate has notes of chocolate, silky with noticeable acidity, dry tannin frames the finish suggesting this offering may have 3-5 years of development. Touriga Nacional , Tinta Roriz , Jaen , Alfrocheiro.

Friday Flight Spain

Friday Flight 4 - 8pm $16 to taste 5 wines with 3 additional for purchase.

The Flight: Spain

Spain sits among the world’s most important wine countries, with over one million hectares under vine across 139 wine-producing regions. But while Spanish wine is no longer unfamiliar to the U.S. wine trade and consumers alike, the sheer range of quality wines produced across this Iberian country is often underestimated.

To classify the wines of Spain under a single style or character would be impossible. This is a country of exceptional diversity, with vines planted across a huge range of climates and geographies. Vineyards stretch from the lush and rainy coasts of Green Spain to the extreme and arid plains of the Meseta, from the valleys carved by the Ebro River to the volcanic Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa.

The sheer number of grape varieties also widens the spectrum of Spanish wines. More than 200 grape varieties are grown here, from international favorites to the country’s many local specialties, like Tempranillo, Mencía, Albariño, and Verdejo. While local winemakers carry on the traditions passed down through Spain’s winemaking history, they also look to push their industry forward, experimenting with styles and increasingly focusing on organic viticulture.

Zarate Albariño 2025 Rias Baixas $28 - Rias Baixas is located nestled on the Atlantic Coast in Galicia in the Northwestern corner of Spain. It is a relatively new appellation, the DO having only officially formed in 1988. However, the history of this region goes back much further to the 12th century when the Cisterian Monks are reported to have introduced the Albariño grape to the region. It is actually made up of five distinct sub-regions, each with its own soil type and microclimate.

Zárate Albariño 2025 is an elegant and vibrant white wine, where the sea breeze seems to waft into the glass with hints of lime and oyster shells. On the palate, it unfolds fresh and lively, balanced and harmonious, leaving a persistent saline touch reminiscent of its granitic soil origins.

Viña Zorzal 2024 Garnacha Tinto Navarra DO $17 - This wine presents a brilliant, intense ruby color with deep, purple edges. On the nose, it offers clean, high-intensity aromas of ripe strawberries, red currants, raspberries, and red cherries, complemented by floral spices, black pepper, with subtle licorice and earth notes. The palate is dry and fresh, showcasing soft, food-friendly tannins and a medium body.

Quinta do Estranxeiro 2022 Ribeira Sacra Tinto $28 - Ribeira Sacra is a stunning, deeply forested wine and nature region in inland Galicia, Spain, renowned for its dramatic river canyons and ancient monasteries. The 2022 O Estranxeiro fermented in concrete and oak vats. They gave up the stainless steel, where they feel Mencía gets more reductive, and this matured in oak and concrete for seven months. It has notes of wild berries, herbs and flowers, with a spicy twist.

Eguren "Condado de Eguren" Tempranillo 2023 $13 - 100% Temprañillo from Castilla la Mancha just east of Madrid. Inky red with brambly fruit and subtle tannins.

Olivares 2023 Altos de la Hoya Jumilla $16 - The Olivares' family vineyard, Finca Hoya de Santa Ana, is a very special place. It is planted at 825 meters on very sandy soil with a high percentage of chalk. There are also a very high percentage of old vines, with the oldest planted in 1872. Because of the sandy soils of the region, the old, ungrafted, bush-pruned vines at the Bodega never succumbed to phyloxerra. It offers chewy tannins, with flavors of black cherry, bell pepper, and savory smoke.

Bonus

Bodega Hermanos Mesa 2023 Locartas Blanco Tenerife $29 - The Canary Islands comprise seven main volcanic islands in the Atlantic Ocean that are celebrated for their dramatic landscapes, unique microclimates, and indigenous grape varieties. The archipelago is a premier destination for adventurous travel, stargazing, and discovering distinctive, high-quality volcanic wines. The blend comprises eight individual parcels throughout the valley, planted nearly entirely to Listán Blanco (with 2-3% Albillo Criollo) and generally situated at lower altitudes than the single-vineyard bottlings. Vinified in stainless steel and aged for six months in 90% steel and 10% French oak, “Locartas” leads with sumptuous aromas of apricots and fresh almonds, and delivers mouth-watering, grippy salinity on its taut, kinetic palate.

Alvaro Palacios Les Camins Priorat 2023 $30 - Racy red bramble berries with notes of hibiscus, pomegranates, cochineal and cherries. Some chewy tannins add more gravity to the otherwise medium-bodied palate. Juicy, firm and stony in the medium-long finish.

Bonus Bonus

Marques de Legarda Gran Riserva Rioja 1999 $45 - 37 months in American casks. Maroon with middle depth, and a rim that marks its evolution through aging in oak. Clean, brilliant and intense.Medium-high intensity. Fruity bouquet with toasted notes. Ripe fruit with a spiced background.

Friday Flight June 5th: Sparkling Wines

Friday’s tasting will feature sparkling wines from around the globe! Stop by between 4 & 8pm for a $16 flight of bubbles.

Terra Serena Gran Cuvée Italy N/V $15
- The wine is bright straw yellow color with a slight greenish tint. Taste wine pleasant and harmonious, with notes of fruit - apples, pears and citrus.

Almacita Blanc de Blanc Argentina NV $19 - This hand harvested sparkling wine is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes from multiple vineyards within the Uco Valley. The nose is bursting with notes of peach, pineapple, mango, mandarin, and watermelon that lead into a bright and fresh palate laced with green apple and a touch of fresh baked bread.

Ca de Medici Lambrusco di Sorbara, Italy $20 - Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC takes shape in Remigio 101, made using the mono-fermentation technique from 100% Lambrusco di Sorbara flower must.

The maceration of the grapes on the skins after pressing is very short and this gives this Lambrusco its typical bright pink color. It is characterized by delicate and floral aromas, like rose and violet, that timidly give way to a distant aroma of strawberry and pomegranate.

Domaine Brazilier Brut Loire Valley, France $22 - The domain Brazilier is located at the heart of the Coteaux du Vendômois AOC, in Thoré-la-Rochette. The vines cover an area of 25 hectares and have been managed under sustainable values for many decades. Lemon, citrus and pear on the palate. Chalk, limestone and bright acid on the finish.

Eyrie "Spark" Brut Rosé Willamette Valley $22 - A truly unique blend of 8% Pinot Blanc, 55% Pinot Noir and 37% Chasselas Doré. Grape sources are 86% organically-certified & come from vines on Jory volcanic soils. Fermentation and aging occurred in a mixture of wood barrels and stainless steel. Taste: Medium to deep cherry-pink in the glass with aromas of cantaloupe, berries, and citrus along with some secondary notes of stone and toast. Pear and citrus rind develop on the palate over a structure of crisp acids and creamy fruit notes. An initial rush of exuberant bubbles is quickly followed by a soft effervescence. Slight astringency balances the richness from extended lees contact, and deftly carries the mineral finishing tones of blood orange and wild strawberries.

Bonus Wines

Schaller Cremant de Bourgogne Brut France $27 - A blend of Aligote, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Concentrated aromas of ripe pear and lemon, complemented by hints of honeycomb, toasted brioche, and delicate floral or mineral notes. The palate is crisp, vibrant, and medium-bodied with fine, persistent bubbles.

Gramona Cuvee Aliances Corpinnat, Spain $39 -  While this wine is made in the Cava region of Spain this wine is labeled as Corpinnat. Many sparkling wine producers in the region formed their own DO of Corpinnat that is based on higher standards than those of Cava. Organic farming, native grapes, long tirage and vintage wines. Brut La Cuvée Aliances is 63% Xarel·lo, 32% Macabeu and 5% Parellada from Corpinnat, Penedès. It was aged a minimum of 24 months on the lees (the bottle tasted had 34 months). Subtle tertiary aromas, pastry notes, lime, mandarin zest and grated apple open in the glass. The mousse is fine and lively, with an ethereal, dry palate that lingers with gentle autolytic complexity.

Inspiration 1818 Champagne, France $49 - Due to the already high prices in Champagne, the tariffs really did a number on them. I think the least expensive Champagne I currently have is $62 so I was glad to hear the 1818 was back in stock. This is a 2nd label of Billecart-Salmon made for restaurant's by the glass programs. It is composed of approximately 37% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 30% Meunier, and benefits from 70% of reserve wines. Expect a beautiful, crystalline golden hue with fine bubbles. It offers a fragrant nose of brioche, almonds, butter, and pears. On the palate, it is well-balanced with a crisp backbone, offering white flesh fruits, citrus, and a hint of pepper on the finish.

The Flight: Italy 4 - 8pm $16 with 3 additional pours for purchase.

Castello Roncade Venezia Pinot Grigio 2024 $16 - Notes of apple, hay, and white flowers, which create a lively and refreshing aromatic profile. Its balanced acidity and pleasant minerality.

Ca' del Baio 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo $22 - From a top Barbaresco cru producer, the 2024 Ca' del Baio Langhe Nebbiolo is a superb, high-toned expression of the noble grape. The nose is bright and expressive, with notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petal, layered with savory hints of licorice and crushed stone. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and graceful, with fine, silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that frames the pristine red fruit. The finish is long, clean, and savory.

Ippolito 2021 Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore "Liber Pater” $17 - Founded in 1845, Ippolito has been passed down through five generations of winemakers. Its guiding principles are the promoting native vines, safeguarding the territory, and respecting traditions, nature, and the biodiversity of the native land. This ruby red wine is 100% Gaglioppo, a delicious and ancient grape native to Calabria. "Liber Pater" Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore DOC, an ode to the Italic god of wine and vineyards, is intoxicating with complex aromas of wild berries, violets, and spices. Full-bodied with velvety tannins.

Fattoria Zerbina DOC Romagna Sangiovese “Ceregio” 2023 $21 - Fattoria Zerbina is named for the warm southerly wind that blows through the Marzeno Valley, where the land begins to rise towards the Apennine Mountains that divide Romagna from Tuscany. The estate was established by Vincenzo Geminiani, who purchased the farm in 1966, and immediately set out to estate-bottle his wines, rather than sell them in bulk. The wine has a glowing, super-saturated, dark ruby-red color. Aromas of Morello cherries, sun-dried plums, dried cranberries, and porcini mushrooms emerge when the wine is first poured, adding faded rose petals, black Mission figs, and wild mint.

Musto 2021 Aglianico del Vulture "Rosso Maschitano” $22 - There’s a reason Aglianico is often called “the Nebbiolo of the south.” At its best, it carries that same combination of structure, perfume, and age-worthiness—but with a darker, more sun-drenched core. An aromatic ensemble that develops lively and cheerful notes of blueberries, strawberries, and pomegranate combined with herbaceous and vegetal bursts. The exquisitely Mediterranean sip fills the mouth with crisp, soft, and slightly mineral tones in the finish.

Bonus Wines

Pojer e Sandri IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti Nosiola 2024 $28 - Pojer & Sandri has been at the forefront of winemaking innovation in Trentino-Alto Adige since 1975. The estate, led by Mario Pojer and Fiorentino Sandri, focuses on producing wines that honor both tradition and modern techniques. The wine is fermented and aged in neutral oak barrels, which allows the varietal's delicate characteristics to shine. On the nose, it presents aromas of green apple, pear, and wildflowers, complemented by hints of hazelnut—a signature trait of Nosiola. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with crisp acidity and a pronounced minerality, reflecting the rocky soils and cool mountain climate.

Umani Ronchi Cúmaro Conero Riserva 2021 $40 - Conero DOCG wine is produced in a unique geography consisting of rolling hills stretching all the way to the Adriatic sea. The terroir of this area is ideal for cultivating vineyards, providing flat and agreeable conditions for them to thrive. The unique climate and soil of Monte Conero have created a suitable living environment for certain non-indigenous grape varieties. It presents an intense bouquet opening with lovely ripe plum, blackcurrant and morello cherry notes, finishing spicy on black pepper, vanilla and tobacco.

Lungarotti Vigna Monticchio Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG 2018 $69 - The Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG wine must be subjected to an ageing period of at least three years, of which at least 6 months are in the bottle. 100% Sangiovese from the hills of Umbria. The Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio 2018 is a long-lived wine as the maturation was perfectly balanced, the alcohol content lower and the acidity more pronounced than in the hot 2017 vintage. In the glass, it releases the intensity of a cherry in spirit, immediately chased by deeper notes of liquorice, cinchona and gunpowder. The aromatic boost is typical of the vintage, director of the complex narrative of Vigna Monticchio’s aromas. On the nose, hints of sour cherry, bitter cocoa, marzipan, date and black tea take over, held together by a delicate balsamicity that accompanies a more Mediterranean closure centred on blood orange and myrtle.

Friday Night Flight: Abruzzo

Friday Night Flight: $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional wines for purchase.

U.S. consumers have recently become more enthralled with Italy’s smaller, lesser-known regions, and Abruzzo is certainly one of them. But as one of the oldest winemaking regions in the world, Abruzzo is no stranger to growing and producing wine. Its wine quality was first mentioned by Polybius, a Greek historian who lived in the second century BC, and later by Roman authors Ovid and Pliny the Elder.

That strong winemaking tradition has carried on in Abruzzo throughout the centuries, becoming imbued in the region’s very culture. For much of that history, winemaking has been centered in the Peligna Valley, an inland, mountainous part of central Abruzzo. Over the last 50 years, however, viticulture has begun to evolve and spread across the region, and the region is now gaining recognition for its intense, vibrant, and full-bodied wines.

Abruzzo is a natural haven for grape growing, with over 32,000 hectares of vines planted across the region. Bright, sunny days, a large diurnal shift, and moderating influences from the Apennine Mountains to the north and the Adriatic Sea to the east make it the perfect place for grapes to thrive.

Torre dei Beati 2024 Pecorino d'Abruzzo "Giocheremo Con I Fiori" $27 - A fine and elegant nose, of citrus and white flowers, rounded by honey hints but vibrant of the typical herbs flavors of the variety (sage, rosemary, lavender). Smoothly entering the mouth, where the zesty acidity and minerality move up the tasting balance giving a long, mouthwatering persistence.

Umani Ronchi Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Podere 2024 $15 - A young and immediately drinkable wine: ruby red colour with violet tints. Robust and full-bodied in the mouth, slightly tannin-rich with a dry and flavourful finish.

Cantina Frentana DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo “Vallevó” 2024 $16 - In the glass, it shows a delicate cherry pink colour. On the nose, fresh aromas of red berries, cherry and delicate floral notes unfold. On the palate, it is light, juicy and harmonious, with vibrant freshness, fine fruit and a pleasantly elegant finish.

Federico Faraone “Le Vigne” Rosso 2019 DOC Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Montepulciano $21 - Dark and brooding fruits aged in large botti, hints of underbrush, floral notes and vibrant.

Azienda Agricola Cirelli Montepulciano D'Abruzzo 2022 $22 - Deep purple with violet reflections. The nose delivers wild mint, thyme, red cherry, and oregano aromatics over dark fruit undertones. On the palate, tart cherry and blackberry flavors combine with wooly tannins and bright acidity, creating a thick textured mouthfeel with a fresh, crunchy finish.

Bonus Wines

Torre dei Beati 2024 Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo $27 - This traditional Abruzzo wine is the perfect middle ground between a rose and red. Only a real Cerasuolo has this particular shade of color and is a perfect “summer red”. It manages a transversal nature and is suitable for multiple gastronomic combinations. Think of this as the original "chilled red" before the craze began. The 2024 is energetic and crisply refreshing, with depths of ripe strawberry fruits and tactile mineral tones that add lovely traction toward the close. This has a long, tense finish, with pleasantly chewy tannins, nuances of cranberry and rosy inner florals.

Barone Cornacchia 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva 'Vigna Le Coste’ $30 - Cherry, thyme and pink peppercorn are lifted yet lightly concentrated in this brisk red. Bright acidity and raspy tannins frame the flavors of grippy cherry skins and blackberry on the streamlined palate.

Torre dei Beati 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo "Cocciapazza" $45 - The 2021 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva Cocciapazza has come along beautifully after another year in bottle. Dried violet, sweet smoke, ash, dark chocolate shavings and crushed blackberries form its brooding bouquet. It's silken and elegant in feel, with a wave of ripe red and black fruits flowing across a core of tactile minerals and spice. Drink now through 2040.

The Flight 4 - 8pm: Oregon

Twill Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2022 $26 - Delicate yellow and brilliant in appearance with glints of green, aromatically this is brimming with notes of tinned peach, lime, sea salt, jasmine, and toasted graham. With air, further notes of strawberry, cream, and slate are found. On the palate, layers of texture are filled in around a natural core of acidity. Flavors of peach, lemon curd, and papaya are laytered throughout.

Timothy Malone Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2023 $19 - Not only does Tim make his own wine, but he also makes the wine at J Christopher so he's a busy man. Instead of adding sales traveling and demos to his price he just keeps the wine inexpensive so it sells itself. This wine is packed with cherry, cranberry, pomegranate. Floral on the nose and such a deal under $20.

St. Innocent Winery 2024 Pinot Noir 'Villages Cuvée', Willamette Valley $29Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, bramble, dried herbs, and roasted coffee beans. The blackberry and boysenberry fruit core is adorned with flavors of grilled beef, spice and smoky oak. From younger vines in Shea, Freedom Hill, and Temperance Hill vineyards.

Patrica Green "Reserve" Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2024 $32 - This wine has flavor intensity, texture, complexity, structure and length that are usually impossible to find in this combination in a Pinot Noir at this price point because wineries generally don’t have this much incredible old vine wine available to not only supplement their entry-level Pinot Noir, but be the actual backbone of it. This is red-fruited, highly perfumed Pinot Noir with the sort of high-level texture and length that are normally found in wines of double the price and more.

Mendiva Tempranillo 2023 Three Mile Vineyard Gorge AVA $29 - Mendivia was started by Colin and Holly Howard to celebrate our favorite Spanish varietals from some of Oregon and Washington’s emerging AVAs (American Viticultural Area). We source our grapes from the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge (OR and WA) and the Rogue Valley. Dark and dusty fruits, black plums, and spice, more New World in character than anything else, on the aromatics of this Tempranillo. Dark chocolate, sweet, opulent dark fruits and notes of rich espresso.

Bonus Wines

Crowley Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2023 $35 - Single sourced from Four Winds Vineyard this clonal blend exemplifies the radiance and energy of the Four Winds site, capturing its natural disposition of bright acidity and saltiness. Built for immediacy and all occasions our Willamette Valley Chardonnay is aged 11 months in barrel and finished in stainless steel to combine succulence with freshness for perfect drinkability.

Timothy Malone Syrah The Rocks Milton Freewater Walla Walla $39 - The Rocks District is receiving international acclaim for its wines; particularly Syrah. The character of these wines is discernible, and global recognition is fueling the planting of new vineyard acres. Simply, this winegrowing appellation has been recognized as one of the most distinctive growing regions in the world. Modern day wine grape farming within the AVA is three decades old.

Cameron Clos Electrique 2023 $84 - Established in 1984, Cameron is committed to producing wines that express terroir that is truly Oregonian. As a founding member of the Deep Roots Coalition, an organization that believes irrigation stands in the way of terroir, their vines are not irrigated; instead they're allowed to dig deep into the soils to find water in some of the best sites in the Willamette Valley.

This Friday we’re exploring Tuscany. In ancient times, the area of Tuscany and its environs were part of the Etruscan empire. The Etruscans were the first vintners to work the land. They trained their grapevines with natural, high-trellis supports like fig, olive, and nut trees. Eventually, the area was taken over by the Romans.

During the Medieval period, wine was a major commodity in Tuscany. Wine sales were documented as early as 1079 in association with the Mercato Vecchio in Florence. Local wine merchants formed a guild in 1282 in an attempt to promote and regulate their trade. Many of the Tuscan wines we know today—Chianti, Brunello, Trebbiano, and Vernaccia—can be traced back to the 14th century.

From the time of the post-World War II reconstruction through the 1970s and ‘80s, Tuscan wine production focused largely on quantity over quality. It was also during this period that many of the region’s large estates, which had been historically owned by local nobility, were sold to non-Tuscans. But the wine region went through a rebirth in the 1970s and ‘80s, which gave way to the premium quality regional wines that are world-renowned today. Meanwhile, the torch for Tuscan viticulture is being carried by the diverse mix of Tuscan, Italian, and foreign winemakers that have taken over the old estates—and introduced new ones.

Wines you’ll find in Tuscany:

Suvereto DOCG, produced in the homologous Val di Cornia area, accompanies typical local recipes, such as tortelli, buglione d'agnello and game dishes. Suvereto is made from 85% to 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Sangiovese grapes.

Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG, also mentioned by Dante in the "Divine Comedy", is the only white wine on this list. It has a characteristic straw-yellow color that tends to golden with age.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1980 became the first Italian wine to obtain the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita label. The basic grape varieties are Sangiovese (Prugnolo gentile from 70% up to 100%) and Canaiolo nero (maximum 20%).

Chianti Classico DOCG is produced in the territory in the municipalities of Greve in Chianti, Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti and part of the administrative area of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Barberino Val d'Elsa, Poggibonsi and Castelnuovo Berardenga. The wine contains at least 80% Sangiovese, and bottles of Chianti Classico DOCG are labeled with the characteristic "Black Rooster" seal.

Brunello di Montalcino (Rosso in the "normal" type and Riserva) is made from the Sangiovese grape variety, traditionally referred to as "Brunello" in Montalcino, and is produced exclusively within the municipal boundaries of Montalcino, among the hills of the Val d'Orcia. Excellent with meats and elaborate dishes, Brunello is also considered a "meditation" wine.

In this week’s flight:

Cantine Gini 2022 Chianti “Solatio"  $15 -  A warm-vintage wine offering ripe, fruit-forward flavors with balanced tannins. User profiles highlight cherry, red fruit, blackberry, and subtle earthy or oaky notes.

Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta 2024 Rosso di Montepulciano $20 - Fresh and approachable, this Sangiovese-Merlot blend opens with black cherry and a hint of red licorice on the nose. The palate is structured with grippy tannins up front, giving way to juicy red fruit that is both vibrant and inviting. Soft, savory notes emerge as the wine opens, balancing the fruit with subtle earthiness.

La Fortuna 2023 Rosso Toscano “Fortunello" Montalcino $22 - Made of 100% Sangiovese the nose is classic ripe cherries and strawberries and a hint of coco powder. On the palate of this full-bodied wine, you will find the fruit describe above with a touch of minerals with some tannin structure, which gives this wine a great back bone and very lush feel to the palate and has an incredible long finish.

Azienda Lisini 2023 Toscana "San Biagio” Montalcino $25 - Clear ruby-purple with slight brightening on the rim. Very clear and intense nose with lots of rich blackberry fruit and dark currants, some bay leaves. Round and polished on the palate, fruit is revealed nicely, then shows some harsh tannin, slightly drying.

Montepeloso 2024 A Quo Suvereto DOC $27 - Dark cherries and strawberries with fresh sage and thyme aromas follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and a crunchy finish. Savory and delicious with lovely energy and drinkability. A blend of 45% sangiovese, 35% cabernet sauvignon, 10% malvasia and 10% other varieties.

Bonus Wines:

Montenidoli DOCG Vernaccia di San Gimignano Tradizionale 2023 $30 - This Vernaccia is mineral-forward and complex, and the skin contact it undergoes imparts texture, concentration, and body. Aromas of ash and crushed seashell, stone fruits, honeydew melon and fresh cut herbs. The fruit and bright acidity are balanced through the long finish.

Fèlsina 2022 Chianti Classico $33 - Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Black cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs inform this potent, super-classic Chianti Classico.

Camponovo DOCG Brunello di Montalcino 2020 $64 - Intense ruby color streaked with garnet. Intense, ethereal bouquet melts into aromas of sweet violet and iris, with hints of spices such as tobacco, cinnamon and leather. Smooth, warm and velvety flavor, harmonious, rich in fruit and persistent in the mouth.

Friday Night Flight: Sicily

Friday Night Flight: $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional wines for purchase.

Gebbia Grillo Sicilia DOC 2023 $21 - From the first sip, it’s bursting with bright citrus, juicy green apple, and a hint of tropical pineapple, all wrapped up with a lively, refreshing finish.

Alcesti 2023 Isola dei Profumi Rosso $15 - A blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato with vibrant notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, and a subtle whisper of spice. Crafted from carefully selected indigenous grapes, it offers a rich, full-bodied experience with a velvety finish.

Cantine Volpi 2024 Era Sicilia Nero d’Avola $16 - This medium-dark, rich and full-bodied red wine is full of dark fruits such as blackberries and plums and complimented with soft, round and ripe tannins with balanced acidity.

Murgo Etna Rosso 2022 $21 -  Expressive, floral, and spicy. Cardamom, cranberries, toasted spice, and floral perfume lift from the glass. Elegant and floating on the palate, it has a lean to medium-bodied texture, with fine tannins and a clean stony finish.

Calabretta Cala Cala Rosso NV $23 - This wine is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio, all grown on volcanic soil, hand-harvested, and partially in large barrels and partially in stainless steel. Notes of baked cherry, spice, orange peel, coffee, smoked meat, and dusty red fruit.

Bonus Wines

Gulfi di Vito Nero D’Avola “Rossojbleo” 2023 $25 - Seductive aroma revealing tones of red berries, flowers, cinnamon and minerals. Juicy, spicy and fresh, with rich tones of ripe dark fruit, lively acidity and sweetness. Long fruity and floral aftertaste

Gurrieri Frappato Terre Siciliane 2024 $26 - This latest vintage offers a fresh blast of raspberry, strawberry, and smoked orange peel on the nose. The palate is crunchy and crisp, and tastes of the raspberries that fall off the bush when you try to pick them and a dusting of black pepper.

Terre Nerre Etna Rosso 2023 $42 - I only received 6 bottles for my allocation of this wine last year and was delighted when I was offered a bit more this year. To me, this is one of those wines I like to sit with for a while and contemplate its nuances. Made from very fine Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from low yielding vineyards (35 Hl. Per hectar), both young and old.

The grapes are macerated until the end of fermentation. The wine then continues its life in wood until bottled roughly one year after harvest. Even young it is a distinguished wine. Fresh, fragrant, beautifully slender and with a fine grip, it has a natural polish, a stage presence, as it were. And, in aging, as its weave gathers into rich complexity, it is a wine for gentlemen.

Friday Flight: French Wine

Friday Flight: French Wine, $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional wines for purchase.

For this week's flight, let's taste some of France's greatest hits. It was hard for me to narrow it down, but I think you're going to like it. We'll be pouring wines from Rhône Valley, Bordeaux, Loire Valley, Côtes Gascogne and Burgundy.

Domaine Chiroulet Côtes Gasgone "Terres Blanches" 2023 $15 - Domaine Chiroulet is located in one of the most beautiful areas of the Côtes de Gascogne, about 8 kilometers north of Condom. The landscape covers the gently rolling hills with a patchwork of colors. The domaine's top white blend is made with 50% Gros Manseng, 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Ugni Blanc from old vines. It is aged in tank for 8 months with lees stirring to provide additional richness. The nose explodes with Sauvignon Blanc-like notes, including lime, a touch of melon and citrus fruits. Medium-bodied on the palate, this wine finishes dry and clean.

Domaine de Fenouillet 2023 Ventoux Rouge $15 - The brothers Soard, Patrick and Vincent, own and operate this impeccable domaine the cellars of which are situated in the village of Beaumes de Venise, in the shadows of Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. They trace their lineage as vignerons back to their great-grandfather, Casimir Soard, whose wines were winning medals as early as 1902. 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan from the AOP Côtes du Ventoux. Inky purple-black color. Enticing aromas of black cherry, boysenberry, tobacco and eucalyptus. The dark fruit and spice is deep and concentrated on the palate but kept fresh by a zingy acidity.

Mas de Daumas Gassac 2024 Moulin de Gassac Guilhem Rouge, Languedoc $16 - Often called Languedoc's Grand Cru, Mas de Daumas Gassac has been 100% organic since Aimé Guibert bought it in 1974. The red blend—mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with indigenous and unusual varieties—ages for 20, even 30 years with ease. One of France's most singular wines, period.

Chateau Recougne Bordeaux Supérieur 2022 $20 - Legend has it that the name Recougne came in “recognition” of the quality of its wines by King Henri IV in the early 17th century, and while wine has been made on the site for 400 years, the estate is perhaps more relevant today than ever. The wine is marked by a dense ruby/plum color and attractive, juicy blackcurrant fruit. Supple, round and generous, this is an over-achiever and a sleeper of the vintage. Drink it over the next 5-10 years.

Angélique Leon Chinon, Loire Valley 2022 $23 - Angélique Léon is part of a new generation of Chinon vignerons focused on precise, transparent expressions of Cabernet Franc shaped by careful vineyard work and restrained winemaking. Working within the Chinon appellation, she emphasizes site, soil, and vintage variation, prioritizing balance, freshness, and drinkability over extraction or power. This Chinon opens with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and currant, supported by fresh herb notes. On the palate, the wine is fresh and medium-light in body, with bright acidity shaping the red-fruited core and fine, unobtrusive tannins providing gentle structure.

Bonus Wines

Domaine Paul Autard Côtes du Rhône 2023 $24 - 70 % Grenache, 20 % Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre, from grapes grown in several parcels just outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in Courthézon. The vines average 45 year old, with the oldest being 75 year old. Autard’s Côtes-du-Rhône is a smoky, complex wine, loaded with warm raspberry fruit, showing many of the best attributes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Domaine de la Horizion, Côtes Catalans "Mar y Muntanya" 2022 $30 - “Mar y Muntanya” (“Sea and Mountains” in Catalan) combines 45% each Syrah and Carignan with a splash of Grenache, raised in a mix of cement vat and large oak barrel. Domaine de l’Horizon is a hidden gem in the world of winemaking, nestled in Calce at the base of the snow-capped Pyrénées. Founded by Thomas Teibert and the Christ family, our estate embodies a profound love for nature. Guided by the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture.

Domaine Capitain Gagnerot Pernand Vergelesses, Burgundy 2023 $56 - The Domaine Gagnerot was established in 1802. After the second world war, Roger Capitain maintained the estate and passed the stewardship to his two sons, Patrice and Michel in the 1980’s. Now in the hands of the ninth generation, Pierre-Francois and Delphine carry the family tradition.

Wednesday Tasting: Loop de Loop 5 - 7pm Free

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

We’ll have Loop de Loop from the Columbia Gorge pouring 5 - 7pm. Details coming.

Loop de Loop wines’ Light Anthology Vineyard, sits at 1250 feet on Underwood Mountain, with a panoramic view of the Columbia River and Mount Hood. Formerly known as the Underwood Mountain Vineyard, It was planted in 2001 by Joe and Jack Brady, and we fell in love with it long before we were able to buy it. We grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, in a vineyard nestled between two forests and surrounded by incredible biodiversity.

The Light Anthology Vineyard is our 9 acre, organically farmed vineyard that Scott farms meticulously – practicing regenerative farming.

Next to the vineyard we have an additional 8 acres of woods and meadow. We are working to restore the land and, with the help of friends, have planted hundreds of native plants, grasses and flowers in an effort to cultivate a healthy, holistic system that will ultimately produce the best wine possible.  Scott’s most important task is restoring the soil health in the vineyard. He is doing this through incorporating the following practices, among others: encouraging diversity in the vineyard floor; seeding diverse cover crops; thoughtful composting; spraying compost teas; use of fish hydrolyse to encourage beneficial fungi and by spraying cinnamon oil rather than sulfur whenever possible. He doesn’t use synthetic chemicals and he doesn’t spray copper. Additionally, he has hung Barn Owl and Raptor boxes to help with rodent pests. We do not till nor irrigate and hope to incorporate livestock into vineyard care soon.

Friday Flight April 3rd: Barbera

Friday Flight April 3rd: Barbera

Friday Flight: Barbera 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours

For this Friday's Flight let's focus on Barbera. It's on of my favorite grapes and I've recently been amazed at two that I think might be the best I've ever had.

No grape has known such a dramatic upgrade in its fortunes and image in the last 20 years than Barbera in Piemonte, north-west Italy.

This grape was once regarded as rather ordinary, partly because it was so widely planted, the most common Piemontese grape in fact. (A similar fate had befallen Shiraz in Australia, Zinfandel in California and Malbec in Argentina – all now considerably elevated in reputation.) Light, tart Barbera was the everyday drinking wine on Piemontese tables, something to wash down the wondrous local cuisine and its succession of courses, paving the way on special occasions for a bottle of a serious red wine made from  Nebbiolo.

The man who first put Barbera on a pedestal, or at least demonstrated that it was capable of making serious wine rather than local mouthwash, was the late Giacomo Bologna of the Braida estate whose Bricco dell'Uccellone was the first internationally marketed Barbera. The wine, which has since been followed by hundreds of increasingly expensive imitators, owed its distinction to two factors, much lower-than-usual yields and ageing in French oak barriques.

Like the much softer local grape Dolcetto, in Piemonte Barbera has traditionally been planted on sites too cool or poorly exposed to bring the late-ripening Nebbiolo to full ripeness. (Dolcetto ripens early relative to Barbera, but Nebbiolo typically needs a further two weeks on the vine after Barbera is picked.) It is an extremely vigorous vine and even the DOC laws sanction yields as high as 70 hl/ha so the temptation has been to allow this prolific vine to over-produce. Barbera's natural excess of acidity and shortage of tannin are accentuated at high yields. But if Barbera is grown on sites specifically suited to it and pruned carefully, more concentrated wines are the result.

The wines from Asti tend to be a brighter ruby/garnet color when compared to Alba with flavors of cherries, blackberries, and plums. I often find more ferrous mineral and spicy notes in Barbera from Asti. From personal experience they seem more structured, powerful and energetic. Like all Barbera, they are low in tannins and naturally high in acid with a nice body and fruitiness. Barberas from Alba seem to have a darker pigment with fuller body. Often I smell and taste more violets, dark fruit and vanilla. Barbera d’Alba is often aged in barrique (small French oak casks) and gives you a bolder rounder and riper flavor with bright acidity.

Cantina di Casteggio Barbera 2022 $15 -  The only wine not from the Piedmont region but from Oltrepò Pavese, LombardyThe nose opens with intense perfume of black fruits — blackberry and blueberry — layered with tart cherry, violet, and a subtle earthy undertone. Anise and dried herbs emerge with time in the glass.

Marchesi Della Rocchetta Valmorena Barbera D’Asti 2023 $19 - In the nineteenth century, the Marchese Leopoldo Incisa (1792-1871), a member of the Royal Academy of Agriculture in Turin, made significant contributions to research and knowledge in the fields of enology and grape varieties of that period. The legendary Sassicaia was created by another member of the family, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a passionate winemaker and a true visionary. He married the Countess Clarice della Gherardesca, and moved from Piemonte to Bolgheri in Tuscany.

Ca' del Baio 2024 Barbera d'Alba "Paolina" $19 - Paolina di Cà del Baio is a Barbera d'Alba DOC that embodies the essence of the Piedmontese terroir with elegance and intensity. Produced in the vineyards surrounding Alba, the beating heart of the denomination, this wine is born from the Barbera grape variety, capable of expressing vibrant acidity and a persistent fruity character. The Barbera d'Alba here presents itself with a captivating balance between freshness and structure, the result of careful vinification and aging that enhances its complexity without weighing it down.

Olim Bauda Barbera D’Asti La Villa 2024 $20 - La Villa has been Olim Bauda's favourite wine for decades – not because it is particularly loud, but because it seems so natural. No barrique, no spectacle, but plenty of character. The secret lies in the balance: fruit and freshness, elegance and energy – everything is there, nothing imposes itself. Bright ruby in the glass with a youthful violet colour. The bouquet plays on the fresh side: sour cherry, raspberry, dried herbs, a hint of violet and a delicate mineral note.

Mauro Mollino DOC Barbera d’Alba 2024 $23 - The 2024 is a delightful expression of the Barbera grape variety from the Alba region. Pouring into the glass, it displays a deep ruby-red hue, hinting at its youthful vibrancy. On the nose, the wine exudes a bouquet of ripe red fruits, including cherries and raspberries, interwoven with subtle floral undertones. These fruity notes are complemented by a touch of spice and a hint of vanilla from the oak aging process.

Bonus Wines

Cantine Del Pino Barbera D’Asti 2024 $26 - The Vacca family has been living and working the vines at Cantina del Pino, one of the oldest estates in Barbaresco, since the 1920s when Giuseppe Vacca, bought the property. Branching out from the legendary Produttori del Barbaresco Cooperative, Renato Vacca (the great grandson of Giuseppe Vacca) convinced his father, Adriano, to start their own label in 1997. In 2013, Renato's wife Franca joined the winery, and took over winemaking when Renato sadly passed in 2020. This single vineyard (Bricco Gallinetta) barbera, from sandy soils, was vinified in stainless. Tart and bright, with wild cherry, raspberry, and morello plum woven through the medium palate, with flocked tannins hugging the sides, and salinity lingering on the lightly warming finish. Though 14%, this has fantastic freshness on the palate.

Cigliutti Barbera D’Alba Vigna Serrabella 2023 $30 - The 2023 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Serraboella is a total delight. Bright, plump and juicy, the 2023 is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. A rush of dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, blood orange and cinnamon fills out the layers. Soft contours frame it all effortlessly, while floral top notes lift the finish. Delicious.

Scarzello Barbera D’Alba Superiore 2022 $43 - A small, 12 acre vineyard located in the heart of Barolo, the Scarzello estate has a long and impressive history. Since its very beginning some three-hundred years ago, having been one of the only estates not owned by the extremely powerful Marchese Falletto (the grandfather of the Barolo wine), Scarzello has prided itself on its independence and its individuality.

Friday Flight 3/20: Spain

Spain $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Pardevalles 2024 Albarín Blanco Tierra de Leon $20 - Tierra de León (officially DO León) is a Spanish wine region in the southern province of León, specialized in intense, structured reds and unique rosés made from the indigenous Prieto Picudo grape. Located at 750–800m altitude with alluvial, rocky soils, this continental climate region also produces crisp white wines using Albarín and Godello. Albarín Blanco is a rare, indigenous white grape variety from Asturias and León in northwestern Spain, distinct from the more common Albariño. It is known for producing highly aromatic, crisp, and high-acid wines with prominent floral, pear, and citrus notes, sometimes displaying a slightly bitter, refreshing finish.

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya 2023 Monastrell Jumilla $15 - Jumilla is renowned for its old-vine Monastrell wines, whose depth and complexity and intense fruitiness convey the Mediterranean character of its land and history.

Rivarey Rioja Crianza 2020 $14 - With more than 600 wineries, 14,800 winegrowers, and centuries of history, Rioja is Spain’s leading wine region. Not only was it the first Spanish region to be awarded Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1925, but it was also the first to be elevated to the prestigious Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) status, in 1991. Nearly 30 years later, there are still only two regions in Spain (out of 67) that have met the stringent standards for DOCa classification.

Rioja is most well known for its red wines, which are made primarily from the Tempranillo grape variety and aged in the region’s huge collection of oak barrels—a tradition tied to the long and winding history of Rioja itself. Many wineries are more than a century old, and quality winemaking techniques honed over generations have been passed down to today’s Rioja winemakers.

Vera de Estenas Bobal Utiel-Requena 2024 $18 - Recently, a handful of quality-minded growers, using artisanal farming and vinification, are producing highly individual wines with true complexity.

Bodegas Monteabellon 2024 Tempranillo “Avaniel Ribera del Duero $19 - One of Spain’s top red wine–producing regions, Ribera del Duero is located in the northwest of the country, about two hours north of Madrid, in the center of Castilla y León, Spain’s largest autonomía, or state. Ribera del Duero runs from the east of Aranda del Duero westward to Valladolid.

Bonus Wines

Guimaro 2024 Ribeira Sacra Tinto $25 - Ribeira Sacra is probably the DO with the most dramatic wine-growing landscape in Spain. It is in the heart of Galicia, an autonomous community in the far north-west of Spain, within the provinces of Lugo and Ourense. The canyons of the River Sil are especially known for their breathtaking beauty and depth, a spectacular landscape of sheer, almost vertical walls and scattered plots of vineyards.

Pecina 2019 Rioja Crianza $27 - With more than 600 wineries, 14,800 winegrowers, and centuries of history, Rioja is Spain’s leading wine region.

Álvaro Palacios 2022 Priorat Les Terrasses $53 - The name Priorat derives from the Latin. The Priory of Scala Dei gives name to the region. There is an interesting story about why the Carthusian monks decided to establish in the Priorato de Scala Dei. It was around 1163. A shepherd told a priest about a vision he had: angels descended from a celestial ladder. Soon after the monks started the construction of the Priorato de Scala Dei: the priory of the stairway of God. A small village grew next to the Priorato to provide service to its needs and the region took the name of the monastery. Monks were gone a long time ago but the ruins of the monastery remained and are actually being restored. One of the wineries in Priorat holds the name of Scala Dei and its wines are actually produced at the old priory cellars.

Friday Flight 3/13 4 - 8pm Old World Bordeaux vs New World Bordeaux Blends

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase

Bordeaux, as a whole, is France’s largest appellation d’origine côntrolée (AOC) area, though it’s not the country’s largest winegrowing area. It makes up 25 percent of France’s AOC vineyard area but accounts for only 14 percent of the country’s total vineyard area. Although Bordeaux is famous for its 1855 classification, only 5 percent of the vineyard area is devoted to the production of cru classés.

Vineyards in Bordeaux are typically associated with estates, or châteaux, rather than plots of land, as in Burgundy. There are approximately 6,300 winegrowers in Bordeaux (half of what there was 20 years ago). The average size of a Bordeaux wine estate is 17.6 hectares of vines, and nearly 60 percent of the region’s estates are still owned and run by families.

Additionally, there are 300 Maisons de Négoce, which sell more than two-thirds of Bordeaux’s wine across 170 countries. Bordeaux has 33 regional wine cooperatives and three cooperative unions. There are also 82 wine brokers that facilitate transactions between négociants and the estates.

Although a relatively young wine industry, Washington State is the nation's second largest wine producer with more than 900 wineries, and is ranked among the world's top wine regions. Washington wines are found nationally in all 50 states and internationally in more than 40 countries.

With more than 50,000 acres planted, Washington State has ideal geography and conditions for growing premium vinifera grapes. Primarily grown on their own root stocks, vines produce grapes of consistent quality year after year. While Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Riesling and Chardonnay dominate in terms of production, over 40 different varieties are produced throughout the state.

Washington has consistently outperformed other leading wine regions with a higher percentage of wines scoring 90 points and above, while maintaining a lower average cost for these wines, based on Wine Spectator magazine’s ratings.

Lone Birch Cabernet Sauvignon WA 2024 $15 - In the shadow of the Rattlesnake Mountains stands the 70-year-old Lone Birch Tree, providing shade to vineyard workers, a landmark to travelers, and inspiration to generations of descendants of Howard Miller, entrepreneur, successful realtor, and visionary. Bouquet of black currant and toasted oak leading to a smooth finish with soft lingering tannins.

Friday Flight 3/6 Rugerri Corsini

Ruggeri Corsini Fight 4 - 8pm with Francesca Argamante $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Nicola was born in Tuscany and raised in Piedmont. There he met a lithe woman from Sardinia with jet-black hair, a fine roman nose, and a mesmerizing accent. They were at the University of Turin together: she was getting a post-graduate degree in viticulture; he a PhD in vine disease and ampelography, and they fell completely in love.

In the early 1990s Nicola was consulting for various producers in the Langhe while writing his papers and fulfilling his degree requirements when he stumbled upon the hamlet of Corsini. It lay in the southern, somewhat cooler zone of the appellation, tucked away in a little valley just north of Monforte d’Alba, a couple of houses and farm buildings surrounded by vines. He took Loredana there. In 1995 they got married, bought the hamlet, and started their life together.

Podere Ruggeri Corsini: farm + Nicola’s mother’s surname + name of hamlet. Nicola’s mother is in there because she provided money to make the purchase.

Nicola still consults here and there, but mostly he is in the cellar while Loredana is in the vines; their two daughters, Vittoria and Francesca, are also involved in the domaine. They have 30 acres of vineyards divided among nearly as many parcels, and average just over 7,000 cases of wine each year. They walk a really nice line between traditionalists and modernists, meaning that their wines are transparent with clear impressions, while possessing superb drinkability.

2023 Langhe Bianco $20 - a white wine from a blend of an autochthonous grape - Arneis - and two international varieties - Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Thus, obtaining a wine with an intense and complex bouquet, with a good structure and a good longevity

It is a wine known for its fragrance and freshness: it has a ruby red color with violet reflections, a fresh, fruity bouquet and a dry, rich, harmonious flavor that leaves a lingering scent of almonds

2023 Barbera d’Alba $21 - This wine is considered the typical red table wine: originally appreciated in Piedmont and Lombardy, today it is widely spread throughout Italy and the world. It has a ruby-violet, red color, a rich and varied bouquet with fruit notes reminiscent of blackberries, cherries, strawberries and berry jam, along with spicy notes of cinnamon, vanilla and green pepper. Its deep, full and robust flavor softens the acidity typical of this variety.

2022 Langhe Nebbiolo $26 - Thanks to its properties, Nebbiolo vine produces grapes of the highest quality, resulting in a well balanced wine as for color, body, acidity and particularly persistent aromas. It is known to be a vine suited for aging with aromas that evolve in a spectacular way.

Friday Flight 2/27 - Bordeaux

On average, Bordeaux produces 59 million cases of wine per vintage. Red wines typically make up 85 percent of the total volume production. Dry whites and Crémant de Bordeaux account for 10 percent; rosés, clairets, and Crémant de Bordeaux rosés make up 4 percent; and sweet Bordeaux whites account for 1 percent of total volume.

Bordeaux’s variable weather patterns can make the growing season unpredictable. Part of the reason that Bordeaux winegrowers are experts at the art of blending—rather than masters of varietal wines—is that blending enables them to manage climatic inconsistencies and their impact on the ripening, quality, and quantity of the individual varieties.

The Flight 4 - 8pm $16 for 5 pours with 3 additional for purchase.

Château Costis Bordeaux Rouge 2024 $14 - 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Extraordinary deep, shiny, red color. The aroma is powerful with a lot of fruitiness. The taste is soft with a very good amount of tannin for a Bordeaux wine. It is a very well balanced wine.

Château Lacoste Bordeaux Rouge 2022 $16 - Nice ruby color, a nose of berries and a delicate and elegant body with a lovely finish. Soft tannins and a good balance between roundness and power. 70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Château La Maroutine 2018 Bordeaux Rouge $17 - A deep and intense garnet red colour, a warm and powerful nose with touches of red crystallised fruit. Soft tannins in the mouth mixed with toasted bread aromas.

Château De Cranne Blanc 2022 $24 - This is based on the Sauvignon Gris grape variety that, today, is rarely even heard of in Bordeaux, although it was commonly grown generations ago. Sauvignon Gris is more about elegance and floral fruit aromas. The vines are planted in clay, gravel and chalk-based soils.
