Loire Valley 

While the region is France’s third largest wine-producing region by volume (and the largest for AOC-based white wine), the Loire Valley manages to provide incredible focus, consistency, and quality. Sommeliers and wine buyers have come to depend on the region’s 51 official appellations for a variety of refreshing sparkling wines, crystalline whites, playful rosés, profound reds, and long-lived sweet wines often tinged with noble rot. 

Two thousand years of continuous viticulture has helped forge this reputation, but so has a region-wide effort to embrace sustainable viticulture and terroir-centric winemaking. Today, 30% of the valley’s vineyards are either farmed sustainably or organically—a figure that increases each year. This forward-thinking ethos has secured acclaim for present-day vintages, but more importantly, promises a bright future for the Loire’s wine industry.

Cabernet Franc

This was the Loire’s first red grape variety, introduced into the region in the 11th century, with its signature notes of black cherry, violets, black-pepper spice, and tobacco leaf, the wild and distinctive red wines of Cabernet Franc from the Loire are frequently identified in blind tastings. Many of the most noteworthy wines come from the Middle Loire—where it is the principal red grape—at such laudable appellations as Chinon, Saumur, Anjou, and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil. Rosé hailing from the Loire’s Cabernet Franc can be fresh and fruity with a touch of minerality, such as Cabernet d’Anjou.

Sauvignon Blanc

In the Middle and Centre Loire, Sauvignon Blanc takes on a vibrancy and energy that has inspired generations of wine lovers worldwide, especially those from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, known for their signature aroma of smoke or gunflint. In addition to these sought-after wines, look for 100-percent varietal bottlings from Quincy, Reuilly, Touraine, and Menetou-Salon.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is native to the Loire valley and the star of the Middle Loire (Anjou and Touraine regions), where it produces some of the most age-worthy white wines in the world, both dry, sweet, and sparkling. The best-known Chenin Blanc wines hail from Anjou, Savennières, Saumur, and Vouvray, but numerous appellations continue to embrace the variety. Known for its high acidity and extract, Chenin Blanc can yield a wild spectrum of aromas ranging from pear, apricot, and quince to hazelnuts and marzipan with age. In Crémant de Loire, Chenin Blanc’s presence in the cuvée lends these traditional-method sparkling wines a unique aromatic twist not found in other crémants. When affected by the noble rot, Botrytis cinerea, the grapes manage to thread the needle between richness and vivacity. 

Brazilier Blanc Tradition 2024 Chenin Blanc $20 - Apple, pear and frech quince. Vibrant acidity and mineral driven. 

Domaine des Forges Anjou Cabernet Franc 2024 $18 - A very fresh, upfront, aromatic Cabernet Franc with notes of black cherry, black berry, wild raspberry with violet and sweet peppers. Forward, plush fruit flavors fill the palate with a soft velvety finish.

Angelique Leon Chinon 2022 Cabernet Franc $23 - This Chinon opens with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and currant, supported by fresh herb notes. On the palate, the wine is fresh and medium-light in body, with bright acidity shaping the red-fruited core and fine, unobtrusive tannins providing gentle structure.

Arnaud Lambert Saumur 2023 Caberent Franc $26 - Classic Cab Franc nose with hints of black pepper and ripe, perfumed fruit. Plum, herbs and cherries. Medium-bodied and extremely friendly with zippy and engaging acid. Very expressive and perfumed and made in pure juicy and early drinking style. Fresh and fine with lovely light texture and very little tannin this is a perfect wine for anytime drinking. 

Domaine Petit Bondieu Bourgueil 2024 Cabernet Franc $26 - This wine is 100% Cabernet Franc sourced from gravel terraces along with clay and limestone slopes. It was aged for 12 months in stainless steel tanks. The deep nose offers bright, grapey fruit aromas that mix with a touch of earth. In the mouth are structured flavors of dark red and black fruit that exist in a dry and ethereal manner. The mouth follows the nose, adding a subtle dry structure and a bit of a chewy finish.

Famille Ogereau En Chenin Anjou 2024 $32 - Grown in the schist-rich soils of Anjou, this is Chenin Blanc in its purest form—bright orchard fruit (think green apple, pear, and quince), a sharp mineral backbone, and a mouthwatering finish that keeps you coming back for more. It's fresh and focused but with that little extra texture and depth that makes Chenin so endlessly fascinating.

Thierry Véron Cave de la Bouquette Sancerre 2025 $36 - This wine is soft, with a warm, tropical-fruit character. With crisp acidity to back up the ripe fruit, it is a well-balanced wine, both crisp and generous.

Arnaud Lambert Saumur "Tue-Loup" Cabernet Franc 2023 $46 - Lambert’s Saumur “Tue-Loup” is 100% Cabernet Franc comes from 3 parcels planted 35 years ago (2021) at 80m on a mild slope facing southwest with white tuffeau limestone bedrock and 70-80cm of sand and silt topsoil. An ethereal, pure, juicy Cabernet Franc from the hill of Brézé. High-toned, fresh red fruits, followed by notes of earth, gravel, and iodine. A lovely complexity that plays between savory earth and fruit notes with refined acidity and smoothly polished tannins.
