Altano Tinto 2022 Douro Valley, Portugal $14/$12.60/$11.90/$11.20 - Touriga Franca 40%, Tinta Roriz 30% and Tinta Barroca 30%. A lively, well-spiced red, with an appealing mix of brambly boysenberry, cherry, violet and blood orange peel sculpted by light, taut tannins.

Famille Perrin Côtes du Rhône 2022, France $15/$13.50/$12.75/$12 - Beautiful intense and deep red colour with purple reflections. This wine opens up with a powerful, very expressive empyreumatic nose with toasted notes, undergrowth and mushrooms such as truffles subtly mixed with aromas of kirsch.

Borgo Scopeto Chianti Classico 2019, Italy $19/$17.10/$16.50/$15.20 - Full and intense. Various and well integrated aromas ranging from small black berries to noble wood, like vanilla, cocoa and liquorice create an enigmatic complexity. Dry, well-structured, combining austerity and elegance: the acidity is well balanced to a texture of intense but very fine tannins. Long aftertaste.

Bonus Wines

Umani Ronchi Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore CaSal di Serra 2023 $21/$18.80/$17.85/$16.80 - Comes from selecting only the best grapes grown in the special Montecarotto vineyard, this crisp white shows gorgeous notes of granny smith apple, jasmine and under-ripe peach in the glass. The palate is firm and elegant, with pear and sage coming through, and is marked with a touch of mineral tension.

Umani Ronchi Castelli di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva Plenio Classico 2016 $36/$32.40/$30.60/$28.80 - Made with organically farmed fruit from 50-year-old vines, the Umani Ronchi 2016 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore Casal di Serra Vecchie Vigne is a fairly important white wine from Le Marche. It opens to round and so aromas of orchard fruit, passion fruit and apricot. However, you also get zesty and green notes of kiwi and honeydew melon to keep the wine from tasting heavy or flat. In fact, this remarkable oering from Central Italy oers so much freshness and zest, you should save it for your next party-worthy seafood chowder. This is the second vintage that is made with only organically grown fruit.

Umani Ronchi Conero Cumaro Riserva 2019 $49/$44.10/$41.65/$39.20 - It was created in the mid eighties to celebrate the Montepulciano variety of vine, and an area close to the sea with highly calcareous soils, using methods based on very strict selection of grapes in the vineyard and what were, at least for then, modern techniques of vinification and ageing. The name Cùmaro is a tribute to Mount Conero, komaros in Greek, which means ‘arbutus’: an ever- green shrub which grows freely in its woodlands. Deep ruby red colour with garnet hints. The mouth is soft and enfolding, with smooth tannins and a pleasant elegant and dry finish. The nose presents an intense bouquet opening with lovely ripe plum, blackcurrant and morello cherry notes, finishing spicy on black pepper, vanilla and tobacco.
